Black Smoke on acceleration

Since I have fitted a reversing camera, I have noticed on moderate acceleration I am getting significantly higher than normal levels of black smoke coming out the back of the exhaust. Rocket55 was following me today up Bells Line of Road and commented on it as well. I had the problem a few years ago when I had the old tub the underside of the tailgate would be covered in soot. When I changed over to the trayback, the problem disappeared as no soot could accumulate on the tray so the problem was forgotten about. Until recently.
On the BDG thread it mentions air filters being blocked can cause black smoke, the airfilter has always been serviced properly and I still get the smoke. BDG also mention that it could be a blocked particulate filter and also other various things that the engine struggles for oxygen. See quote below.

I'm not convinced that it's injectors. Make sure that every single thing breathing wise related on the engine is right. I think it's more that the combustion is struggling for oxygen more than it can't burn the fuel. It's a hunch but.
Anyway, air filters, exhaust and particle filters blah blah... Try this first, if no good, we can go from there.

Im guessing I have some airflow issues causing this that I will have to find. Would a decoke of the intake manifold be beneficial.. I'm up aroung the 160000 mark now so the intercooler has to come off for tappet adjustment. Is there any other causes that may be magnifying the problem?

Dirty AFM, clogged intake by EGR. Rich fuel mixture is what causes the black smoke.

Running a chip? Try a lower setting

Bog stock, no chip at all.

Give the AFR a clean, check your intake for a build up of soot, check all sensor connections if you are still having issues then possibly an ecu reset.

AFR? Which one is that is that the MAF above the airbox, its as clean as a whistle.

Whoops, my mistake I was looking at air flow research v8 heads. Yeah I mean't AFM/MAF sensor.

Clean the map filter.

Also sometimes they can have a tiny crack. See arow. This can also cause issues

If it is dirty/blocked. Which it will be.
It slows the response time of the map/boost sensor. Causing black smoke.

Found under the intercooler black cover. Clean with carby Cleanner or maf cleaner.

There is something else to check, as well.
Get your injector feedback values checked, because of the kms. 160,000 wasn't it Skog, mate.
Feedback value range is 3.0mm3 to -3.0mm3.
Injection volume is 5mm3 to 12mm3.
While your plugged in with a diagnostic tool, check the DLC for fault codes.
Windsor Toyota is a good dealership, and I do trust them, Skog.
Gee, I have a KZJ120 that's blowing a lot of black smoke. I remember seeing that little crack there on the filter. At the time, Friday afternoon, I didn't think anything of it. Thanks, BH. I will put a new one in on this vehicle. Total volume on cold start was only 10.8mm3, so in range.

can you do a ECU reset at home? or toyota only?

Easy! disconnect battery turn the head light to discharge the residual and then reconnect and away you go.

Will book it in Roo next week. I've got to get the clockspring fixed before it goes out of the 7year 200000k warranty. To get back on topic. Is their some sort of printout/ report that I can ask for, and obviously they would need to charge me something for their services roughly what should I expect to pay for a report? Yeah its up around the 160000 mark now, was going to get the injectors replaced and have the new seats put in by BDG, valve clearances checked and intake cleaned. (and a partridge in a pair tree.. ) all in the one go.
Think for the first time this has been removed...


Boxhead, think I may have found the little filter thing. In the bottom pic, with the red arrow. Is the other filter replaceable with the yellow arrow as well? Could I push the friendship and ask for some part no's...

Popped the filter out and you can definitely see evidence of residual oil and junk.


Would it be beneficial to replace these filters at certain intervals say 50000km or so?

I thought the extact same thing about the filter you have pointed out in yellow when I had a look.
I cleaned out the MAP filter about 3 weeks ago with about 30-40 seconds worth of aerosol maf cleaner in the top inlet using the little plastic aerosol extension - fits in there perfect and tones of black crud came out. A great tip (also posted in a couple other threads) thanks BH!

Digging through my photobucket account. Found an old pic of what my old tub used to look like..
The solution at the time was to fit an exhaust extension...
Then the problem was solved after I fitted a tray.
Perhaps I should remove the reversing camera and the issue will go away..

For the price of them like 120 bucks! a clean will do. I do it every service. Also as for the fitting position they click back into place because of the locators on the filter.they will fit both ways but fit better the right way. And no they can not be swapped over like you said before as the odd shaped thing in the vac line is a one way valve. Going to the egr diaphragm.

It came back from Windsor Toyota today. Had the 160000km service done.
Some surprising facts,
Tappets were checked and did not need adjustment as they were all in spec.
All injectors were within parameters. See page 3 for the results.
Only logged fault code is the broken clock spring, engine check light fault when sprint booster was fitted did not appear?
No injectors had leaking seals, but were changed over to the new type.
Here is the service report.






Reckon that's pretty good for a close to 7 year old vehicle.. The vehicle will go back to get the recall done on the tailshaft as they need different bolts for the longrange tank. Clock spring will be replaced at the same time.
