So in the end it turns out a switch/plug near the turbo connected to solenoid had broken away. Pins were still intact.
Toyota don't sell the part individually apparently, want you to buy whole new turbo...I don't think so!
Mechanic just super-glued plug back together.
Hopefully I can source a replacement from a wreckers or something? Actual part looks easily replaceable, only two screws and plug connection... Anyhoo, car running, happy days.

x2 for partsouq - they are my go to for parts these days. I looked there the other day for a complete turbo as mine throws errors every now and then, but they don't have any in stock. I guess I'll be getting myself a 2nd hand unit.
