D4D Exhaust Manifold: Clean & Ceramic coat?

Postby DeadlyBeast on Thu, 05 Sep 2013 1:58 +0000

Upgrading exhaust system has raised a couple of questions:
1. Is it worth while removing the exhaust manifold (E.M) and giving the inside a clean out whilst the dump pipe is off? There's plenty of references regarding carbon build up of EGR but not the E.M :? Guessing there will be plenty of carbon here restricting exhaust escape unless it all gets stuck in inlet manifold/EGR system.

2. Any performance benefit of ceramic coating a D4D E.M?
I see a couple of members including Matty 10K/MR has done this long ago but I haven't found a discussion thread on this.
Pros I see are keeping engine bay cooler, no rust, possibly faster exhaust escape and of course it looks good
Cons....heat sink action of E.M taking heat away from engine block lost?

Depends how many kilometers are on Hilux? Its in the service manual to clean the EGR system but most mechanics couldn't be bothered especially from the Dealership.

The manifold wouldn't have much soot built up as the exhaust velocity and high temperature will burn whatever has been caked on. Problem with the soot build up around the EGR and Intake manifold is the soot from the exhaust combined with the oil from the crankcase ventilation (PCV) causes it to gum up. If you took away the PCV and had it either venting to the atmosphere or through a filter the soot from the EGR wouldn't be anywhere near what you have seen in other threads.

Unless your going to put a exhaust gas temp sensor into the manifold or replacing the turbo with something better or there is an exhaust leak then there is no need to remove the manifold.

I have ceramic coated my exhaust, double coat on the down pipe and single coat on the CAT to tip. Yes it does help to prevent rust and have seen noticeable increase in lowering EGT however if you don't plan on running a chip or upgrading the turbo then I see no need to ceramic coat the exhaust or manifold.

If anything it won't help the engine run cooler, it will just help cooling the turbo down quicker before shut down.

Hope that helps.

I would also like to point out if your going to remove the manifold, you might as well port and polish the exhaust ports and manifold itself but I would highly recommend getting someone who knows what they are doing because flow is more important than making more room.

Thanks BFJ
Rolled over 100K last month.
Will be doing an EGR clean before 120Kservice.
Plan for new injectors and turbo upgrade around that time.

Yeah - didnt think ceramics would reduce engine temps. I hadn't thought of ceramic coating the E.M having a positive effect on cooling down the turbo quicker. Will consider this.

The extra effort p & polishing not worth the expense and effort for my purposes - though it would be good for efficiency.

So to sum up the exhaust manifold shouldn't have the same thick build up that EGR suffers due to higher temps and exhaust velocity therefore no need to clean at this stage. I'll stick a scope up there just for interest sake.

Deadly,

You are correct... I had my manifold and also the turbo housing ceramic coated when I rebuilt my motor a few years back.

Image

Why? Mainly because I was getting a bunch of stuff ceramic coated for my dirt bike and I was curious. It looks pretty cool and will prevent rust.

Beneficial? Probably... but not to any great extent that you notice on the truck unless you are really pushing the boundaries of performance and seriously hot rodding your truck.

If you have the time and budget, plan to keep your truck long term and like the look then by all means get it done.

The silver is cool... but black ceramic coating is stelath and my preferred colour option these days.

If there is sufficient demand I could organise some manifolds to be done on a exchange basis.
Not interested in the turbo's.. to tricky to pull apart and to many variables of things to go wrong with a exchange basis on them.
No idea on pricing... I'll come back to you with that.

Cheers,
Matt

Thanks Matty,

The exhaust manifold is the only part in the engine bay that is rusted so would be great to have it coated - even if only for aesthetic purposes. Yep - black ceramic would be the go.
Did you notice any significant carbon build up when you took your E.M off?

I like the idea of an exchange basis.

Will be interested in what you come back with Matt

Deadly,

We could look to do these for $330 delivered on exchange basis.
Remote area's will have a small freight surcharge.

This will be for black ceramic coating on the exterior, and the silver on the inside. The black is hard to apply on the internals and this mixed colour combination is what is normally done on turbo manifolds.

You could opt for the silver colour externally as well if you like.

If there is sufficient interest I'll pick up maybe 2-3 manifolds from the wreckers to have in stock for the exchange program.

The beauty of this exchange based sale will be that we can deliver a complete item to you ready to swap over in a few hours.
Rather than have to take your manifold down to a ceramic coaters and wait the 3-5 days it will take them to get it done and ready for you to pick up... with your truc off the road this whole time.

Anyway let me know if anyone is interested and we can go from there.

Cheers,
Matt

Any word on if theres anything to gain from a porting the manifold? I assume the ceramic takes care of the polishing?

port and polishing on a diesel u will get a very small gain if any.

Very little gain to be had here... and we have no interest in offering this service... The process would be xtremely time consuming and really skilled work... so the price point would be huge.

So we would just sand blast to get rid of any surface rust and on the exterior, and carbon build up on the inside of the manifold so we have a nice clean surface to ceramic coat.

If there was a lot of carbon build up on the returned manifold there would be a surcharge on that as well.

Thanks,
Matt

has anyone seen a steam pipe manifold made for the D4D. there is heaps of room on that side of the bay so wouldnt be hard to make and i think there would be some performance gains over a cast manifold.

A few guys in Thailand have built them... Not sure if anyone here has had a crack yet.

I picked up a few manifolds the other day from Mick at JustHilux wreckers... So I'll get them ceramic coated and will have them for sale on exchange basis in a couple of weeks.

Hey Fellas,

Just got these manifolds back from the ceramic coaters, they have a silver coating on the inside and a black coating on the exterior.

Sorry to hijack but a quick question for you Bigfoot.... Why would these be beneficial to someone with a chip installed? I'm assuming from my limited mechanical knowlage that the chip delivers more diesel, more diesel more ignition, more ignition more heat and gas?

Not sure why this thread has has fark all action but interested to see a few pics of the coated manifold.

Matt @ Monster Rides, do you still do these? Price? ( I am still waiting on invoice for CV spanner ;) )

I have seen that someone on Qld makes a stainless steam pipe manifold for the D4D. Looks the goods and apparently accepts the stock turbo and maintains position.

I am thinking of getting either of these as I want to drill and tap the manifold for the pyro gauge.

Most likley has little to no action because it has little benifit other than cosmetic and this model is now getting past the stage that people want to spend money on them just to improve looks.
Personally i think they are still the best model and have seen a few imaculate ones around here lately, wish mine looked like that but then id be worried about scratching it again, got over that long ago.

Yep, I have never understood those that cry over a scratch or wanting to keep the k's down. It's a 4x4....

As for me, I will tinker around with it and am keen on getting more use out of it so was wondering about this and other mods. Am surprised no one has but up a photo. Photobucket is shit.
