05 d4d startup engine dies

Postby cizzink11 on Fri, 14 Jun 2013 2:59 +0000

Hey guys.

I have had this problem for a couple months now car went in for a major service but didnt fix the issue.

When my cars been sitting for more then 6 hours and I jump in to start it, after a second or two the engine will just cut out. Then when u start it she takes a good 30 sec of engine cranking to get it going.

Once its going I get very very small rev drop and increases and a slight injector rattle come and go for about 0.3 of a second enough to pick it up by ear.

I have tried manually priming the filter which does nothing, the mechanics haven't changed the fuel filter yet going bacm tuesday to get it done.

What could the issue be? Its very annoying and embarrassing.

Apparently it could be glow plugs?

I don't think it would be glow plugs if it fires and then dies.
It sounds like it is the fuel running back. There will be a very small leak somewhere that is allowing a small amount of air in, this will allow the fuel to run back, it won't show as an external leak. Since the engine only runs for a couple of seconds, I would guess it is between the filter and engine.
Another possibility is the pressure relief valve in the fuel rail leaking.

What should I replace? Priming the filter till the pump is solid doesn't help it still just keeps cranking over till it starts.

It blows no smoke also.

Its only when the cars been sitting over a very long period. It doesn't happen all the time.
I was leaning towards a dirty fuel filter but one of the guys on the hilux fb page also said exactly what you said, something to do with a fuel return valve

After some hard googling I found my problem is common with a fuel leak or faulty sensors.
Can someone please post a picture pointing out the sensors and problem areas I need to look at and replace? I know bugger all about diesels.

I rang my trusty mechanic today and before I even mention what I think is the problem he said it sounds like the pressure valve. Apparently it is a one way valve that holds consistent pressure in the fuel rail and if leaking, when the cars been sitting over night will bleed of all pressure and get air in the system. It is going in monday and getting some tool plugged in and left on over night to check if there is pressure drops.

If there is he will sus the injectors out then look at the pump and valve.

Before I started the car today I pumped the filter till the pump wouldnt move.i then heard a pshhh noise and some dust or something blew off the top somewhere. I tried to get it to do it again but couldnt.i then started the car and it fired up and ran perfect

Pressure release valve possiable. More likely a blocked suction control valve on the back of the supply pump. Carefully remove it from the back of the supply pump and carefully disable. ( You will need small circlip pliers) You may be surprised to see how blocked they can get. Becoming a more common problem at the moment! On your model if the rail pressure falls below 20000kpa the ecu shuts power to the injector driver so the engine stops.

Agree. My parents car 2011 Hilux D4D dual cab. Cold starts and stalls immediately wasn’t doing it every start but a few times a week once it was raining it was fine. Surprisingly no engine rev fluctuations. Turned out to be suction control valve, With diagnostic computer interface hooked up rail pressure was all over the place on idle, not constant. Probably could’ve tried cleaning it out but replaced the suction control valve $280 and it hasn’t missed a beat now for a few months.
