autoprofessionals.org is the best source of info on techstream. Just read the forum rules, play the game and Autokent is extremely helpful.

version 11 is available now but 10.30.029 is the last version that will run in a VM so I had to downgrade.

xychix: sounds like a driver issue. try reinstalling the drivers for your cable

Toyota Techstream + mini-VCI kit: Intro & HOW-TO

Postby Critter350 on Wed, 14 Jun 2017 6:55 +0000

I've splashed out on VXDIAG VCX NANO from uobd2. Maybe got conned by the hype but thought it looked like a better bit of kit.

No luck getting it working so far though, originally tried in a 64bit W10 VM on my mac air. Then dug out an old HP laptop running Vista, no good either. Blew out the Vista with a fresh 64bit W7, now fresh 32bit W7. Think I've ruled out the OS being the issue...(probably PEBCAK)
Trying out many different sequences of opening software and connecting. Twice it has sort of worked by picking up model code and vehicle spec, but all the fields are blank running health check. Seems to get to that point as a fluke though, normally model code and vehicle spec are blank and the 'A communication error with the ECU occurred. Please confirm the Engine ECU is properly installed.' Assume ECU is installed cos it bloody well starts.

Anyway onto customer support, think this will take a while because it's taking them 24hrs to get back to me, then 12hrs for me to respond cos I'm at work all day. Will keep you posted in case there's anything useful to be learned.

Cheers

Took a bit to get for me to get the cable/adaptor to work on 64bit win. You've got to modify the registry and install a driver in the correct sequence. There are some instructions floating around on here and on the Google's that I followed and to my surprise actually worked.

What's your start up procedure Steveyb? As in, open VX manager, connect USB, open techstream, plug into DLC, turn on ignition.?

I don't have the VX manager business, just a J2534 cable and techstream. All I have to do is plug in cable, ignition on and open techstream (after the initial installation of course)

Does your module come with specific drivers it needs installed? And have you got antivirus software running as it can sometimes block drivers for USB serial interfaces if it's an unknown publisher, this happens to me if I don't suspend AVG and I end up with the same connection error you receive.

You might be on to something. I use AVG as well, haven't tried suspending it.
The instructions say to install VX Manager, then plug the cable into the laptop and the drivers self install. But there's no more instruction than that. AVG doesn't like the latest VX Manager (1.3), thinks it's a Trojan, so I'm running 1.2.
Will try disabling AVG tonight.

Re drivers, it came with a blank disk, so the supplier gave me some download links.

I used these instructions on my Win8 64-bit laptop and they worked flawlessly.

Instructions that apSlain provided a link for are the ones I used and can help explain a bit re the drivers. You can check what driver version you've been given a link for against what's installed for the device in system, hardware devices, find USB port applicable and open driver tab. Yes AVG will see it as a Trojan, so best suspend or uninstall it temporarily and see if that's the problem before diving in to deep
