D4D rebuild: Balance shaft bearings

Postby fisherman*pete on Tue, 05 Jun 2012 9:19 +0000

Gday everyone, im currently rebuilding my d4d and need to get hold of some bearings for the balance shafts.
Toyota bless their souls only sell them as part of the block.. why i dont know. There must be a way to get hold of these bearings as im sure many many d4d owners have had rebuilds by now. The block cant be acid dipped with the bearings in, once the bearings come out cant reuse them and besides mine are well and truly buggered. If anyone knows where i can get some aftermarket ones i would be most grateful :D

Best bet is to ask the engine rebuilders who are doing the machining of your head etc to see if they can source some

Ive asked around and apparently you cant buy these bearings anywhere. There sayin i could either get them made $$$$$, or get rid of the balance shafts. which they have done before without much consequence. i was quite suprised when they suggested it but, the more i think about it the less ridiculous it seems. Any thoughts on this?

Engine Australia is where i got my rebuild kit from, they dont even have the part numbers for bearings in their catalogues. neither does anyone else for that matter.

I took the engine to Moore and sons diesel engine rebuilders in welshpool to get the block machined and they have done several 1kds and i asked what they would do.
because the block cant be acid dipped with bearings in if the bearings are ok the block is hot washed and bearings left in and reused. in my case the bearings were shot and the balance shafts deleted and the oil feeds blocked off.. so no balance shafts. there now sitting on my shelf. they have done a few like this now and havnt had any complaints. so hopefully it will be all good.
apparently the problem is theres only one oil feed at the rear bearing and has to feed up to the front two bearings and its just not sufficient to maintain the bearings.

the engine is back together and running just like a new one deleting the balance shafts has made no difference to the performance or the smoothness of running whatsoever. so now its just a case of time will tell if theres any long term consequences.
