Turbo Noise

Postby srbsr5 on Tue, 01 May 2012 1:56 +0000

Hi guys,

Just wondering if everyone else is noticing this.
I have a 2010 SR5 Diesel Turbo. When the car warms up and i take off, at around 2000-2500rpm the turbo seems to belt out an annoying howling noise as the car is under load?
Then as i get up to 4000rpm plus it kind of goes away? It doesn't seem to happen when the car is cold and when the car is not under loan.
I know turbos tend to whistle as they spool at higher rpms, but my previous turbo cars never sounded like this or at least i never heard it.

Is it normal?
Do all hiluxes sound like this?

Hope i have described the noise ok :|

Thanks,
Mick

:o  What are you doing revving a diesel to 4,000rpm when cold and under load?

has the exhaust been changed by chance? maybe bearing issues in turbo? just speculating...

I meant revving over 4000 when it is warm..

The noise inst there when it is cold, hence why its not revved to 4000rpm when it is cold...

No change to the exhaust, its all standard...

hmm.. if the bearings had issues, would the noise be there constantly?

Thanks for the reply.

I think I know the noise your talking about, and has been talked about on here before,we come to the conclusion was the clutch its like a low pitched werrrrr, stops and starts between gears,.yeh??????,

Mine does it too at low revs,as per factory mate.
As for reving it to past 4,000rpm ,I dont see the need to, 3,000rpm is my standard limiter. Unless towing then 3,500rpm will do me.
They get noisey and dont go any faster after that i thought.

Only revving it to 4000rpm to test. You are right, no need to...

Mine is an Auto, so i am assuming the noise you are talking about is with manuals?

it wont make a noise when in neutral since turbos only make boost when the engine is under load

Mine has made a howling noise under load or at gear changes since I removed the muffler. Is ur exhaust stock?

Yep exhaust is stock?

Could it be a leak or something loose?

Good point. Haven't changed the air filter. Car has 25000ks. How often do these need changing?

Unless you live in a real dusty area you can get around 40000 out of them. Just remove and blow it out and replace it back.

Are the Hilux air filters known to make noise?

Nope.

I'd suggest exhaust blockage or turbo issue, get one of the local mechanics to have a listen...

Check for exhaust leaks, broken studs, between the cyl head and exhaust manifold and exhaust manifold to turbo. VNT turbo's only create back pressure when on boost.
