Turbo Noise

Postby toyboata on Wed, 23 May 2012 7:27 +0000

I hear mine spool as soon as I touch the throttle pretty much. Up to 10psi is when u hear it the most as being variable vane it makes more noise in the first stage of operation. With the chip and exhaust it makes a very nice turbo noise. Best just on very light throttle when cruising

Bump!!!

Hey mate did you find a fix?
I know exactly the noise your talking about mine does it when warm between 2000 and 2500. On cold not at all sometimes going up hills the howl will increase. Only between them revolutions. However it never happened before I changed exhaust im running a 3 inch strsight no cat to rear hot dog and I think this has caused the problem. So im getting a new set up and chip and if it isnt fixed by that im going to be looking at turbo. Normally people say it might ve a air leak I have checked the air intake pipe ect. Its all fine

Is the belt slipping? Is that what the noise sounds like?

Its abit hard to describe... when your driving along about 2500 - 3500 with half or more than half throttle, theres a howl (like a husky saying WHOOOOOOOO but with bass and that boost noise) from what i think is the turbo reason being its on the drivers side, when on boost. I have made sure all the way through from the turbo to the intake that the connections are tight and sealed. Air filter and intake cleaned (just cleaned out the intake manifold the other day), mind due it did it before and after the clean...

the turbo will always whistle or howl under load around 2000rpm and especially changing gears

just the intake noise under load. all hiluxs do it. nothing wrong with turbo. if bearing issues the noise would be constant and get louder as you increase load/revs. my 2c

Hi all,

My lux has started doing something similar.. to me its a high pitched squeak when idle... if i rev the engine it goes away. earlier i noticed if i undo one clip on the air box to crack it open slightly it goes away straight away? could there be too much vacuum being pulled through everything to cause a belt to slip? im not sure what else this noise can be but it seems when i increase the chance of air flow to the turbo it goes away

that sounds like a dirty filter
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

Thanks Gipsy, I removed the filter to have a look its only done about 6k as i change them every service. It still looked pretty decent so gave it a knock to try and loosen any dust up and get it out and vacuumed out my airbox while i was at it. everything looked ok. Put it back together and still the same... might get another filter just to eliminate it.
Its only a super cheap RYCO one. don't know if they're any good or not

RYCO filters are a good OEM replacement in my opinion. Don't forget to check the rubber dust/water trap at the bottom of the air box, they fill up with crap pretty quickly. If you still think it may be a turbo issue try removing the actuator arm from the turbo stepper motor and manually moving the fanes up and down, they should move freely and smoothly, if it crunches and is stiff to move you have a problem. (remove drivers side wheel and access turbo from there, actuator arm is held by circlips)

Exact same problem here. Normal engine / turbo whistle when car is cold. As soon as it warms up to near operating temperature I get the moan / howling under load.

I actually have a Prado D4D (tried Pradopoint with no luck) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wC5yumtVKPM

If you listen carefully, you will hear the sound i'm talking about.

Thanks

Kizbot.
