Coolant topup disappearing

Postby su888 on Sun, 22 Apr 2012 5:53 +0000

One thing that keeps bugging me is the coolant is always sitting on minimum - I've topped it up to maximum a number of times but it seems to disappear overnight with no apparent wet patches underneath.

Tried a drain and reflush and same problem.

Anyone experienced such a sensation?

Mine was doing the same thing after the water pump was replaced by a Toyota dealer.
They didn't bleed the system properly, I just kept adding coolant every couple of days, took about 3 litres total before the level settled.
Regards Chris.

All vehicles tend to find their "natural" coolant level somewhere between the max and min marks. For example my hilux drops to about 1/2 way and sits there.
remember it's a minimum mark not an Empty mark. Leave it a few days a few days and recheck. if it hasn't dropped any lower then don't worry, that's your hiluxs natural level. If it does drop below the min mark then you do have a problem and should be checked out.

do a pressure test, the prado at my work place got a pissing radiator. We didn't find any mark on ground. It leaked only when moving. Toyota did a pressure test and was able to pin point the leaking location to me. A pressure test can confirm whether your system is leaking or not.

I bought my hilux second hand two years ago, the coolant stays there without adding a single drop after 30000 k.

As others said , get it pressure tested. Also look around for a white or light pink residue sprayed around the belts and pulleys . It can sometimes be better to see a water pump leak from underneath . The breather hole is on the bottom of the housing and often spotted from underneath as this surprises a lot of owners as they didn't know or notice issues even though the level is down .
