Postby damo_1988 on Mon, 09 Apr 2012 6:34 +0000

i have a 2005 hilux turbo desiel on start up it produces a large about of white smoke. only when cold when motor heats up it stops. the coolant level is fine and the motor has not been boiled just wondering if any one else has come across this problem? any advise of points to check would be much appreciated. could it be turbo on way out??????

My LN106 1996 does this during winter. I give the glow plugs another shot to heat by turing the key off/on straight after the glow plug light goes out and it works. A friend of mine said that the white smoke at start up is a sign of incomplete combustion of fuel and is a sign that the glow plugs may need to be replaced.
Cheers.

not much it was a little down. needs a oil change but i don't want to service it if the motor has to have work done it would be a waste of oil??

check the piping from the turbo to the intercooler and see if theres oil in there....if its not turbo seal itll be something far worse in the head...valve seals or cracked head or head gasket...this is alll just speculation tho

could be that when its cold theres being time for oil to seap thru wherever its coming from the burns off on startup...or once the egnine is warm wherever its coming from expands that lil bit from heat and seals up...theres a 100000 and 1 different situtions

Is the smoke white or light blue?
White would indicate water.....crack
Blue would indicate oil.....leak

Whoa whoa whoa! Looking way too deep into this! All cars diesel or petrol will produce white smoke at start up.

1. Because it will use a bit more fuel on cold start to get it up to operating temp.
2. There will be moisture in your exhaust that will be boiling off.

Stop stressing mate :P if it was any of the other things you would def notice it!

white smoke is not too bad, most trucks will also do it when cold.
Its just unburnt fuel

I always thought white smoke was unburnt fuel. My lux used to do it when the intake was full of crap. So I had it cleaned out and was all good.

My 2006 SR5 used to blow white smoke on start up. Took it to my mechanic who said it was an injector issue.
Replaced injectors, and all good now. Might pay to get your injectors checked?

My 05 smokes like a champion when cold, white smoke until warm. Mechanic said it's glow plugs, he reckons 1 is out. Not using oil. I suspect injectors aren't helping either

my 05 was doing this on start up it has 200000ks on the clock it would smoke hard on start up so i put in a fuel injector clean and i replaced the fuel filter it was heaverly clogged up started next morrning white smoke so i changed the air fillter it had done 40,000ks also cleaned the o2 flow sensor started next morning white smoke pulled the EGR off it was clogged a bit with wet carbon yuck cleaned it (see photos in my shed) started next morning white smoke.

i was over it sent it to toyota they said i had 1 injector out of spec and 2 injectors boarder line.
so i asked them for a cost to replace all 4 it cam to $4000  rang around and found a guy doing recons for $1500 a set so went with the rekit option asked toyota to pull out injectors (see photos in my shed) and send to recon guy and reinsail total cost $1900 now i have no smoke and the truck pulls like a V8

also i changed the oil and cleaned the oil pick up in the sump it (very important) was partly blocked with the carbon that was getting in to the oil past the 2 injector seals that were poked.if you leave this to long you will f*%k your engine.

so the story is that white smoke on start up can be low compresion from poked injector seals was told to have seals changed every 40000km at a cost of $400 for the complete set.well worth doing i think
