Turbo Cool Down - Needed?

Postby Nick# on Tue, 24 Jan 2012 7:05 +0000

Hi,
Do you guys let your TD hilux cool down after a drive or just turn it straight off?
A mate has 200,000 on his hilux and never lets it cool down, but i do try when i have a chance.

Any thoughts? is there a topic on this already?

The cool down process is more to let the turbo cool down and let the oil/coolant keep flowing through to get some of the heat out before you turn it off...
If I go on a big trip I'll let it cool down for a few minutes, just going down to the shops I wouldn't bother.

Not really nessicary IMHO.
You will do more damage just letting it idle...Including warming it up for extended periods....

so people waste there time putting a turbo timer in these?
Thats good to know, i was always worried the turbo would shit itself.

I have had truck turbo's go which were most likly caused by not cooling down but i guess thats a hole different ball game.

My opinion is that it is an old school thought to wind down the turbo. Back in the day where the turbo housings were not water cooled and they had brass bearings opposed to newer ball bearing type turbos. The thought was as the turbo was loaded up and was spinning at 20000rpm And you shut the motor down the bush runs out of oil quickly as none is pumped thru with the engine stopped.

If the core is not water cooled, it is good practice to idle them down, this does a couple of things, it lets the shaft speed come down while there is good oil supply, it cools the turbo drastically (compared to the presumed load you just had it under) and the reduced heat stops the oil from cooking in the bearing cartridge which would otherwise happen with an immediate shutoff.
Water cooled cores, obviously less affected...how much? who knows.
AXT or someone like that would be a good mob to talk to if you wanted the technical low down on it.

There is mention of this somewhere in the owners book in the glovebox.
From memory I think it said not necessary to idle after normal city driving, but after high speed and/or heavy load to idle for a while.

great, like driving up to the cfa station at 4am jumping out of the car and going.
if the call is during the day i try to stick to the speed limit but when its 3 or 4am i drive pretty much to the limit of the d4d(big hill to get there)
This is the reason i started the topic

the owners manual recomends letting the engine idle for 1 min after driving at highway speeds  ...basically IMO you should let it idle for a lil bit coz turbos spin rediculously fast (ive read up near 50000rpm at full pelt on some setups) and if you turn the motor off the turbo will still be spinning super fast but with no oil supply...letting it idle for a bit lets it slow down to its slowest speed possible basically...i would recomend idleing for a bit b4 shutdown but hey, everyones opinion is different...

i always let my TT let the turbo wind down for a min after driving the lux. I figure 1 min isnt going to harm the engine, you spend longer at the traffic lights waiting for the lights to turn green

As mentioned above, the oil lubricates & COOLS the turbo bearings. If the engine is off = no oil flow around the turbo bearings.

I use the EGT as a guide & only shut mine off once the EGT is under 250 degrees.

This has always been my understanding of cooling down, keeping the oil flowing so it's not stationary at the turbo which is friggen hot. The oil then cooks, blocks the line and yr turbo gets no oil flow.

I'm new to the hilux tho, is it a water and oil cooled turbo?

I just turn mine off. Reason being is that I generally need to be somewhere, and because the Hilux handbrake is so crap, I need to leave it parked with it in gear (mine's a manual), and I can't do that with the engine running   On basically anything other than flat ground I don't trust the hand brake.

It's funny when you're out wheelin with a bunch of Hiluxs. The ones just parked on the trail are turned off and in gear, the ones leaning up against a rut, embankment or tree are still running with the hand brake on
