Problems with K&N air filter??

Postby jaypes on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 12:34 +0000

good day! don't know if im posting this in the correct section but if i'm not then please change it to the correct section

anyways, does anyone on here run the k&n air filter in their D4D? reason im asking is because im looking to switch air filter and i was looking at the k&n and was told from a friend that they had a problem with oil or something of the other running that particular air filter in the hilux :S:S:S i'm probably getting the story mixed up because it was a while ago but i do remember being told not to run the k&n in the lux and was given another brand to use.

so is this true? or is it safe to use the k&n air filters?

also if anyone is using k&n or another brand please feel free to tell me your experiences/tips/advice

thanks!

K&N filters are not rated for offroad use, sticking to standard filters for offroad would be best.

I went down this path a couple of months ago, and my understanding is that the KUN hilux take in a massive amount of air, when combined with with using a K&N Filter isn't optimal. (The K&N filter doesn't breath as nicely as a normal air filter, this and the fact that a new paper filter is always going to be better then a washed out K&N).

K&N have more a name in the racer car scene rather then offroad.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Problems with K&N air filter??

Postby mint355 on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 2:51 +0000

I had one in my ute, performance dropped off so I took the maf sensor out and cleaned it. Was all oiled up from the k&n filter oil. so i put a genuine paper filter in the lux.... All good now.

Completely agree with above. Use K&N if your sticking to on road only and not going any dirty/dusty tracks cos the oil that you apply to it turns into a paste with all the dust and shit goes through the filter and into the airbox. Stick to the original if you doing any offroad work, or go K&n if you HAVE to have that extra 5 hp for street dragging your mates v6 commonwhore :0 my two cents...

Over-application of oil will cause droplets to contaminate the MAF meter.

my understanding from yall is then don't go the K&N filter?? i don't have a fast lux...just a very disappointing 2.5 with 32'' tyres :( so i was looking to get a little more umph from my engine that is affordable! i do do a little bit off roading nothing harsh as yet....so dont wana get the k&n if it not good in the dirt..

so what would be the best filter to get if not a K&N??

Wow, you really had that much problem with your K&N filters?
Are you all running sporkels & are you all diesels?
I use K&N filter off road with a snorkel on a V6 and so far never had any problems.
What does the diesel K&N filter look like?

I had more problems with the Genuine Toyota paper filter before switching to the K&N and since no problems other than servicing it properly. Most of my driving is offroad in severly dusty conditions, the paper filters are just not an option.

Don't know 'bout the diesel, but i would of thought genuine would be best.
I use the K&N in my petrol and its great. I quite regularly service it (quarterly) and clean the MAF at the same time.

I've been using the K&N filter for about 3 years now, on my 2008 3.0TD, and I am very satisfied. Our roads are very dusty, specially since the quake, lots of debris still and I have no problem. Once, I put the paper filter back cause the K&N was drying, and it was night and day, the truck seemed to be asleep..

I'v had my K&N for as long as I have owned the truck never had an issue I clean it monthly and allow it to dry after re-oiling then a week later i normally clean the maf sensor just for safety sake.

I agree with islandlux22, I can notice the difference between the 2.

the K&N allows more air to flow through if its clean, way more then the paper filter you just have to look at the 2 side by side and its easy to see. so if the KUN needs massive amounts of air a performance filter (K&N or uni filter) is going to be better than the stock
I'v installed K&N on all my family's cars and most of my mates cars, every single one of them has said they can notice the difference.
All performance filters are designed to allow the engine to breath easier (less restriction), so its really 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. You could find info on the inter web to support each side but really it comes down to personal preference. just my 2c

I have had a K&N filter in mine for about 4 months now, and as soon as I put it on it was night and day difference in power.

Not to sure about the off road capabilities, but if you are going to be in a really dusty situation. You can just clean it out when you stop.

Which should be better than leaving a paper filter in there after a dusty drive.
