Overheated at stockton now coolant leaking?

Postby pisso01 on Sun, 06 Nov 2011 7:05 +0000

Hi all,

Just enjoying a relaxing morning at stockton beach trying not to think about the trip home this arvo.

Yesterday when driving on the beach to our camp spot the lux got a bit hot. Got to just over 3/4 on the standard gauge. I slowed down as soon as I noticed and just cruized at an easy pace until it cooled down. I pulled up to have a look and found coolant everywhere. I topped it up hopeing it was only overflow. When we got to camp I had a closer look and it looks like its leaking from the bottom drivers side of the radiator.

I'm wondering what peoples thoughts are on this. It appears the radiator might be cracked but to me it didn't get hot enough for that. Has anyone had a similar situation?

Cheers,

Chris

check you water pump hasnt let go..

It'll spray water everywhere and could make it difficult to work out where its from..

I think ive found the leak. Looks like part of the radiator core has ruptured. May be leaking from the bottom tank too.. Ive got it off the beach ok so now just going to nurse it home. Anyone know the best bet for new radiators. Any really good aftermarket ones around?

Cheers,

Chris.

Just got home after driving from Stockton to Sydney and stopping every 10min or so to top it up again. Im going to pull the radiator out and have a little look see. Hopefully I can get a replacement pretty quick. Might look into a better aftermarket option.

We did have a few corragations while on a 3 month trip recently which might have contributed.

Cheers,

Chris.

Well I just pulled it all apart and found the problem. It appears something has come up and I'm guessing hit the fan which has thrown that something into the radiator. The fan has a big chunk missing and the radiator has a dint and hole in it. Now just wait for new radiator.

Thanks for your input earlier fellas.

Cheers,

Chris.

Mate I just ruptured my radiator when installing a xrox bar. Was the smallest tap and the radiator just shit itself. Was wondering if there was a good branded one but being low on cash didn't help. Got an aftermarket one for 280.
cheers

Spewin ay..

Just for future reference. I did a bit of ringing around today and found PWR don't have one off the shelf but would make one for $850 - 900. I also rang Aussie Desert Coolers, they also don't have one off the shelf but would make one for $750. So I ended up ringing a mate of the old mans and he got me a Denso one for $370. For those that don't know Denso make the genuine ones. It even says Toyota on it. Toyota wanted over $1000 for the same thing. Typical rip off c%*#$..

Cheers,

Chris.

Hi Chris, did you take any pics of the damaged radiator? Do you have the factory protection plate or aftermarket one?
Where did you friends dad call denso? Are they in Syd?
Thanks, Best of luck with the new radiator.

I haven't got any pics but Ill take some when I finish putting it back together tomorrow. I got to get a new fan before I finish it off. Yeah Ive still got the factory bash plate under it. I actually found the culprit! Small stick about 100mm long and 20mm diameter. No idea how it got in there.

My Dads mate is a radiator repair/supplier so I assume he got it direct, no idea. He is in Brookvale Sydney, on the northern beaches.

Another thing I thought I should note. I'm going to start cleaning the radiator and Air con condenser out every 12 months or so. The air con condenser was nearly completely blocked with mud, dust and shit. I don't know how any air got threw it at all. The old radiator wasn't much better.

Cheers,

Chris.

Hummm seems like you need to make a good bash plate or get one from Matt and Monster Rides. (Mmaaxx could help out too)
