this sounds like the problem i had with my old 4runner.

I had it too several mechs and when they did all there tests on their computers they told me everything was telling them that nothing was wrong.

With the weird smell came very poor fuel consumption.

People told me it must have been the way i drove but consumption was the same no matter how i drove.

I never found the cause but i thought it had something to do with the a faulty temp sender, i think it was telling the computer the car was cold all the time and therefor making it run rich.

check your cat converter/s arnt blocked this can give off an unusual smell and give high fuel consumption.

You shouldn't stick gerbils up your tail pipe, they die!

Yea I would be jumping underneath and having a look at the converter, if there is a dint of any kind on it than like Troy said the honeycomb inside could be damaged...

My 07 Diesel has developed a weird smell about the exhaust.....has anyone had trouble with the Cat in the D4D?

Fuel economy is also up the shit.....not that it has ever been any good....ave around 13L/100km, has got worse recently though.

cheers

Nah checked them not long ago and they were all within spec......might have to have another look.

What is the link between exhaust smell and injectors, or are you just speaking about the fuel economy?

just recently my hilux exhaust started to smell really bad, worse on startup, turns out 2 injectors rs so had them all replaced, the smell is fuel related, once replaced no more bad smell, and you will see some increase in fuel consumption. how is the idle, lumpy uneven idle also an indicator.

i figured out it was the detailers had painted all visible parts of the chassis and exhaust. and the smell was coming from the paint heating up and melting away. 6 months on and all is good
