Supercharger & water crossing

Postby RonBacardi8 on Mon, 12 Sep 2011 9:53 +0000

G'day all,

Looking at saving for a supercharger for my 4.0lt petrol hilux but will only consider it if I can still cross water/rivers with water over the bonnet. Does anyone have a supercharger or know the answer?
I'm hoping that there is a way to swith it off temporary and it closes up or I can use a second snorkel dedicated to the supercharger. :?:

Cheers in advance

All the chargers I've seen only suck air through the air filter so unless your looking at twin air filters then only 1 snorkel should be required
Or are you talking about the breathers on rear the the oil lube bearings, in witch making another breather the same as diff will be needed

And if all that put you off why not look at a turbo instead

The TRD Supercharger on my Prado pulls straight through the airbox so you only need the one snorkel. It's been fitted for over 280,000km of general use and four wheel driving (including river crossings and bog holes) without a problem. In my opinion you are more likely to destroy the Alternator first. I've done three

I'm hoping that there is a way to swith it off temporary and it closes up or I can use a second snorkel dedicated to the supercharger.

I think you have been watching too much Mad Max. Unless you have a custom clutch set up; Superchargers are normally belt driven off the engine.

A clutch on a supercharger has been around since the 80's and guess what,
it was fitted at a Toyota engine 4agze in the mr2 and also to some type of targo van

They were designed for use at a set vac. Under power, but they are elect. Controlled by ecu

mr2

That's the Key word. I haven't followed much of the car scene. Just what's been done on a lot of the 4WDs.

Thanks for the info guys, I was informed by a mate that superchargers had to take air from another point other than the air box or snorkel. Thankfully turns out he was wrong, will be sure to let him know ;)
And yes I have been watching too much mad max :D
Time to save up some $$$$

Supercharger & water crossing

Postby ultimate on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 4:59 +0000

The supercharger was fitted in the late 90s so I don't know what is was like before hand. Ken swears by it though and said it was a marked improvement in economy and definitely more power. I've compared it to a few customer vehicles and it's always come out pretty good. It is tempting to put the foot down though so I never get an accurate reading Lol I have always used premium unleaded and serviced it regularly which helps in the long run.

The Raptor S/C kit for Hilux is being reconfigured for connection to any ARB snorkel system

The Supercharger is sealed and will be fine for submerged operation. As the the rest of the vehicle and driveline, well you will find out soon enough the things which are affected by deep water crossings ;)

Not wrong there, I had a front diff full of water and killed a pulley belt bearing also stuffed my starter motor but was still worth going thru all the crossings I have. Also got some awesome footage from it, type ronbacardi666 in the YouTube search bar or check out the footage in my garage
