Manta Dump Pipe cracked for the second time

Postby jep on Sun, 26 Jun 2011 8:53 +0000

Hi guys. Long time between posts. Having troubles with my Manta dump pipe cracking around the flange off the back of the turbo. This is the second time it has happened now and its starting to get real annoying! The hilux hardly gets used nowadays, mainly just for camping. Have noticed this recent cracking from my last corrigated road trip which was only for about 30 mins and on a fairly reasonable road. Have spoken with a couple of people about it and most say it could be a broken/damaged engine mount. Last time I had it in for the crack I had the mechanic check and they couldnt fault the mounts?!
Has anyone else had or heard of this problem? Going to re-weld and gusset the flange this time but i am worried that if there is a fault somewhere causing this beacuse it is under stress, the exhaust flange to be stronger than the mounts on the turbo possibly doing damage to that. Thinking of putting another exhaust on but thats going to be an expensive test if it doesnt stop the fault!

Any advice?

Jep

Had a couple of these at work, fixed the problem by fitting a flexi joint in the pipe. Not sure if your pipe has one or not. Hope this helps

Is it stainless or mild steel?

IMHO every exhaust longer than a set of zoomies needs a decent flex.
You will be surprised how much longer a system will last if it is allowed to move independent of the engine and vice versa
