So the truck has now clicked over 40k and it's time for me to do a valve clearance check. Anyone done theirs or had them done by the dealer? If so were and tight?

dont bother doing them checking them they will be file for a lot longer. toyota never bother.
i just did mine at 140kkm where just out of spec

as long as the head is not too noisy, you can skip the checking. I have been told by one who works with the dealer

they gaps close up not get larger as the valve seats wear.
it is a big job to change shim buckets, timming belt off cams out, injectors out, a big job, maybe do it at 120 or when the timming belt due at 150 and do it all, also water pump will prob be leaking by then and it is behind timming belt so would replace that at same time.
