Hi guys, new to this forum.
Got an 07 d4d sr5 with 135000 kms. Had fuel warning light come on, was told it was fuel filter. Booked it in with Toyota to replace and also on the advice of a mate asked to have an on car fuel system clean.
next morning after having car parked downhill coughed and spluttered at start up and was puffing white smoke. next day left it parked on flat surface and no problem. Have been parking downhill in my driveway since the car was new without any problems. Any ideas on what they could have done to cause this problem.
Going back to toyota tomorrow to see what they say

Well, as of today I have 4 new injectors. The cause in my case is a failed ring/ scored bore in the number one cyl, which was caused by my stuffed injectors. This could also be caused by injector seals or valve clearance not being correct.

So the oil and smoky start up's is caused by 2 things, leaking injectors when shut down (this also strips the oil off the bores) and it is also caused by the excessive crank case ventilation which sends oil vapor in to inter cooler where it drains in to the motor.

I hope this helps people, the car feel better but after a few days I will post again with some more Km on it

My hilux new model 3 litre 2005, blows smoke facing downhill, it's pretty full on. I believe it could be the injector oil seal at the front of the block? I can see some stray oil at the back of the block. What more could it be that causes the downhill start to smoke? The motor needs to be sitting for an hour and the longer it hasn't been started, the more smoke and rougher start idle.

The problem started after having a service and having a heavy duty clutch installed.

From reading all this sounds like potentially a couple of different things.
I had exactly the same scenario as Andrew Hilux above.
Fuel system light then problems starting on the down hill.
Anyone sorted this problem recently. I need it fixed by next Friday as i am going away for 2 weeks and will be towing a boat on sand.

Leaking injector seals cause oil to drip down into the cylinders, hence oil on startup. Front injectors must be more prone to leaking.
Hand the same problem and had mine replaced yesterday. $1810 poorer for 4 reconditioned injectors fitted.

Mack what year model is yours as i have been told they can't be reconditioned.
Have been quoted $500 per injector plus fitting. Toyota badged ones are around $900 each

12/06 model, there are only a few denso specialist in australia who can. Mine were done by Diesel Australia, Slacks Creek Qld. The reconditioned ones they use are the DLC type which they fit new nozzles. $340 each plus $450 labour. 12mth warrenty

Just replaced all injector seals in the missus's 07 Prado and this fixed the nose down smokey starts... one copper injector seal was cut away. This wagon has done 100,000 k's. Imagine whats happening inside thousands of D4d's like mine . The compression forces diesel into the sump via the tappet cover and crystalises the oil , blocking the pickup screen. Toyota knows all about it and won't recall them although they are all getting done after every 40 thousand k's in other countries.

I've recently gotten a big plume of grey smoke on startup. It's not every time, usually after being parked for 12+ hrs. I don't park on an angle at all. I have a steinbauer. It runs fine otherwise once started. I've read about crystallizing oil and such blocking pickup. What's the time frame on this as I'm heading off for a few days.

It turns over easily also. Dropped oil on Saturday and it was clean

I have exactly the same symptoms, white smoke and rough start when parked downhill.

I took it to Toyota because over Christmas there were no mechanics open who by no real suprise told me they could go any further with my issue as i had an aftermarket diesel chip and exhaust fitted.

Im stil trying to sort it out, ill try a mechanic tomorrow and at least i know where to tell them to start.

New seat seals and problem fixed, if this happens to you don't dick around with Toyota if you MUST take it there tell them to check your injector feedback values, replace worn injector if needed. If all are in spec and they say there's no problem tell them to change seat seals. Don't waist time and money like I have. If you can go to a good diesel mechanic. Sydney city Toyota is a joke.

It is a little concerning. The large places pay shit money and sometimes they don't get the quality mechanics. Like the old saying go.
Pay peanuts you get chimps.

I sure have worked in those places. But it still is a shame

Also sometimes they have large staff turnaround as well. So some places may only have one dealer master tech shared between lots of mechanics.

Hello CharlieBrown
I have the same problem as you. 2005 hilux D4D. When parked facing downhill (3 degree slope) hard to start and plenty white smoke - smoke continues for 200m. Park any other way and no problem. Vehicle has done 240 000 km. None of the Diesel experts (or Toyota) can diagnose this one. I hope you can help.

Still white smoke and engine rattle :(

Postby tjingles312 on Tue, 11 Apr 2017 4:01 +0000

Hi Guys,

I am a newbie here and been trying to search the web and this forum related to white smoke and engine rattle during startup. But I haven't found anything similar to my situation. I only found one guy that replacing the catch can solve his white smoke problem.

Here's my problem, every time I startup my '05 Hilux after being parked for more than 3 hrs (I think) there is a thick white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipes and engine seems to be rattling/choking. After a few kms smoke all goes away. I usually rev it up to purge everything. Most of the time during low rpm, engine seems to be losing power even if I step on the gas further. If the engine does not die it usually goes back to normal but with a rattling sound for a few minutes. I usually turn off the engine and start it up again even on the road to prevent the complete loss of power. Thicker smoke is exhausted especially during morning after I parked it overnight. My garage is inclined nose down. I had to replace injector seats and orings and it usually goes away for months. But after the 2nd replacement it went back in just 1 week. I was towed the first time it happened to me. Because of loss of compression, i cant even start the vehicle, that's when I found out i had to replace the seats the first time. I would also like to add that I think around 5 months before the 1st thick smoke appeared i encountered a problem on the turbo a couple of times where I am driving more than 80 kph and the turbo wont engage. It seems like im on a speed cap or something (the feeling). I just restarted the vehicle a few times and the turbo went back on. After that event, i havent encountered the turbo -related problem anymore.

I do not want to resort right now on injector replacement since i havent isolated the problem yet (and its quite expensive! :D ). I have tried rotating the injector position during the 2nd seats replacement to isolate the problem thinking it was related to the injector placement with the inclined parking (because its the front injector where i got huge deposits of carbon). My question is, can this be related to the catch can /oil sump clogging? or ecu calculation of fuel discharge causing frequent injector seat/seal leak? or something to do with the turbo? or simply an injector failure? or could all this injector seal leaks is just a symptom of one root cause?

I hope someone can recommend me on what to do next to at least isolate the problem. Thanks in advance! :)

Hi Jingles. Please use relevant existing threads. This helps keep the information together so it is easier for members to find.

You need to run a techstream diagnostic for starters.
I wouldnt be driving it until then.
Did the injector ports get cleaned before the seats were replaced?
Injectors need to go back into the same port they came from - they are coded
Check your oil pick up screen - if thats not blocked you probably need new injectors and fuel lines
