Have been looking at catch cans but anyone thought of just getting it the egr turned off so no need for catch can?

Two different things bondy.
Catch can is to clean up the oily fumes that are emitted from the crankcase. Those oily fumes are recycled straight back into the air intake system at the intake side of the turbo. From there they gum up the entire intake tract all the way to the intake ports in the head.

The EGR system recycles a percentage of exhaust gas back into the intake system as part of emission / pollution control.

Although both systems divert gasses into the intake tract, they are seperate systems with different purposes.

Seen a lot of posts saying now I can get rid of catch can and get the delete. Looks like I will just get both.

I was going to get the TiapanXP catch can but the HPD one looks good too... Anyone used the taipan?

I just gone the delete from just autos and has made a big difference..

Thanks Stu! what do you mean by a big difference? as in pickup? I am only a little concerned about if roadside emissions testing becomes a thing and having the egr delete in place.....

does putting a catch can on affect warranty?

probabky depends on your dealer, I'd ask them..

The EGR system is different to the reason why you fit a catch can.
Catch cans filter out the oil mist coming off the crankcase, with the gases.
The only connection is that the oil mist ends up going back through the intake and acting as the glue in the fouling.
The best reason for fitting a catch can is to keep the oil mist out of the intercooler internals. If the oil coats the internals of the intercooler, it will not work as good as it should. This will rob you of some power. Some people believe you don't need one and the oil mist acts as a lubricate. They are air ways, not part of lubrication system.

I spoke with a reputable diesel mob and he said that he fitted a catch can but didn't return the hose to the motor, just had a filter on it. He also did the EGR blank plate and said thats all he has done and it goes better than other vehicles, this is a Ranger. He has said that he has put the blank plates in with holes and without in the Hilux and the customers have never come back about them going into limp mode etc.
He did mention that it was totally up to the customer and it was for off road use only
He said that if you run ths hose back to the motor from the catch can then it defeats the catch can idea. Where it goes back onto the motor you block it off.
The more I look into things the more idea's I get then I just get confused as to which one to do and end up doing none......

Why worry about a catch can at all if ya not goin to plumb it back to the motor, just cap the turbo end and run the breather into ya chassis. The greenies will hate you either way!

I had an ECU Chip fitted the other day and noticed a lot of oil in my intercooler so I ordered the HPD Catch Can. Planning to clean the Intercooler/EGR and fit the CC tonight. Will be interesting to see what my EGR looks like at 90K.

Ended up ordering the wrong bracket type from HPD.. but here's the oil residue in my intercooler and TB.

Yeah I found the same when I installed my new front mount

My HPD Catch Can after roughly three, four months of installation. It was put in the car in late April/early May.




The can is about half full with a thick oil. Pretty disgusting. My 'Lux is an '06 with 126,200km on it.

Comparatively, my mate's 2015/16 Isuzu D-Max has had the can in for the same amount of time and is much cleaner. He also does a shit-ton more driving than I do, too. But, it's also a brand new car, so...

Wow! Installed mine over the weekend. Cleaned out my intercooler too - Got plenty of oil out of it!

How do you find the front mount upgrade? Did you see much of a drop in intake temps? I do a fair amount of heavy towing and am considering splashing out on a HPD kit.
