Diesel airbox mod for v6 hilux

Postby 1NCH2 on Sat, 12 Sep 2015 5:34 +0000

I have searched high, i have searched low. Yet it appears no one has ever done what i am thinking of doing. After reading about how restricting the 1gr filter and airbox are and how the 2kd-ftv draws such large amounts of air from its filter and box, why has no one thought to install the diesel airbox into the ggn25? It should flow much better being that the filter medium has a much larger surface area and the increased volume between the throttle body and airbox should allow for more low down torque (hopefully) and to further favour the idea I'm fairly certain there is a mount for the maf sensor in the airbox lid.
Not to mention that it should be a straight bolt in as there is no need to move anything, they use the same snorkles anyway and there should be much less heat soak from the airbox not being on top of the engine.
From what i have seaeched, this is an untapped and potentially beneficial mod that all v6ers can benefit from.
Thoughts people?
If it won't go, force it. If it breaks, it needed replacing anyway.

it would require a complete new intake designed for it as the filter housing is attached to the engine and personally i just cant see a market for it

Not really. The v6 air box can be removed and the throttle body suits on the front of the engine and points towards where the diesel airbox would sit. I think I'm going to bite the bullet and do it. I can get an aftermarket airbox for $160 so I'll post up how it goes. Fingers crossed. :D

Well there's been a few posts where people have been saying the 1gr standard airbox is restrictive and that putting the trd box on us heaps better. I want to find out if i can save $400, get more power, get a better factory airbox and filter while still being able to run a snorkel. Also I'm a tight arse. Ballin on a budget haha

The TRD uses a standard V6 airbox from memory anyway.
I think you're wasting time as the standard 1GR airbox, while ugly, still flows more than enough.

I know this is an old thread but has anyone actually done it, considering it for my own v6 hilux.

Okay, reading up on the trd intake thread I believe there is substance to installing the diesel air box due to reduced heat soak from the housing sitting on top of the engine, however I will never know as I am looking into the trd intake instead. I still think it's worth a shot though.

Did it some time ago with very good results. Intake air temps definitely down with the snorkle.
Hardest part was relocating the dip stick and air con tubes. I used a Nissan Patrol GU ZD30 dip stick in the 1GR tube - fitted well and no problems since. Then a 75mm MAF housing gives me perfect air/fuel ratio's.
