Tonneau cover to fit SR5 with ute liner?

Postby ls3tourer on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 5:56 +0000

Hey Fellas.

I am trying to find a tonneau cover that will fit my 2010 SR5 Dual Cab (fitted with a ute liner) but one that doesn't use those ugly looking hooks along the panels and tail gate.

I Was hoping to get one of those button / clip on ones or ones that use some kind of rail system.

The only problem is I can't find that will fit an SR5 with a ute liner? I did ask a seller on ebay a while ago if you can fit one to an SR5 with a ute liner, he said just to make holes in the ute liner where the rails need to hook on to the tray... but I gave up I couldn't work it out and didn't want to hack my ute liner to pieces so I didn't buy it, haven't seen any since.

Any help and suggestions appreciated, thanks :)

I have been i your pradicament before,,,,I have made press stud on one before on my old utes but didnt want to drill press studs on the new ute,,,,i also looked at modifying a nissan navara cover , just using the clip strip but it all got to hard an i wasnt happy with the tub liner showing were the cover finished ,,,I ended up with a hard lid because i couldnt make one that was going to work and look good without leaking,,,

If you like the look of the press stud type then it is the cheapest and easyest way to do the cover.

I'd love a hard cover, but they're a bit expensive for my liking. How hard are they to remove? As I take the motorbike and mountain bike out a couple times a week...

So in that case I'd probably only use it for when I go camping or require some sort of rain protection over the back.

This is one on my old hilux

The only thing on the new ones with your tub liner it makes the cover look like a thick cheap hard lid

Poles can be cut out easy with this type of cover

Yer the hard cover (new genuine toyota one with the rib lines) are easy to get off just two slip pin things and pop the struts off,,,, I can get it off and on myself with a bit of effort

Check out the Alphaline unit.

They are a button on job and have an alloy frame that clamps on to the tub, I just spoke to them a few days ago, they said they are regulalrly fitted to utes with tub liner. The downside is you have to cut a few small slots, About 8mm wide and 50 long for the hooks, I was just going to seal up the remaining gap with a but of roof and gutter which can easily be sliced with a blade if you need to remove the setup.

I know it does mean cutting into the liner a little but it's been the best compramise I've found so far. I hope to have mine fitted by mid Jan. I'll post up some pics when I'm done.

This is the one I'm talking about, the supplier seems pretty good to deal with.

Hey lad, Ive got one of those Alphaline tonneaus. Ive had it for a few months now and still going strong 8-) Its a pretty good piece of gear and it should work with the liner. Sure beats drilling into the side of the tub.

Thanks for the suggestions!

The alphaline one appears to require the sportsbar to be lifted, how far up does it go? seems a bit strange...

Yeah mate, the tonneau needs the sportsbar to be lifted up about an inch and a bit. I'll post some pics of it when I get home this arv after work :D

this one is probably taken at the wrong angle as there isnt that much difference in height between the bar and the cab. there are some more pics in my shed.

I fitted mine the other day. Cant rave about it enough. The best part is being able to open the tailgate without touching the cover.

Heres a pic showing the cuts to the liner

Image

Best advice is to work out how far from the lip to the top of the liner and measure down. I think mine was about 58mm. you want the top edge of you slot in the liner right on the lip. I drilled the ends and cut between them with a stanley knife.

Hope this helps.

davis.16, how often would you use your tonneau? I love the look of mine and being able to lower the tailgate without having to undo the tonneau, but getting to my toolbox bolted at the front of the tub annoys the hell out of me. So many press studs!

Once I have drawers it will no longer be an issue, but something worth keeping in mind if you are likely to undo your tonneau often. One option would be to only do up every other press stud, but to me that kind of feels like walking around having your fly half undone. :D

UPDATE JULY 2015 - NO SPORTS BAR - Was chasing one for my 2013 SR5 so gave Toyota a ring on the off chance they may have one to suit.

They make a genuine slip/clip on type with sports bars intact but what fitted mine was an exact replica for the SR with no cut-outs for the bar.

Getting fitted this Thursday so will post some pics.

Utecoversdirect have a great product for tub with factory tub liner, just fitted one to my 08 SR5. As at May 22 they were $300 delivered. Drill and rivet alloy rails all round then fit cover and clip in all round, great product, Aussie made.
