TRD COLDAIR INTAKE

Just fitted the new cold air intake to my TRD Lux.
Got it from the US part no PTR03-35090 it is made to fit the Tacoma 4.0lt engine.
The body in our Hiluxs must be a bit different as it was a bitch to fit, the drivers side guard has a lip on it and decreases the room for the air box to fit.
Had to mount the air box on rubber mounts and the plastic intake pipe is not quiet the right angle but it went in.
Intake noise is slightly louder and sounds tough under load and high revs :evil:

Any measure on the performance increase? There is a lot of potential increase but only the right item will find it, could this be the "right item" :?:

Performance has increased hard to say how much, seems to have more mid to high range grunt.
If you place the old intake side by side with the new one the old one must be so restrictive.
One other thing I noticed, where the intake passes through the guard the standard TRD intake just finished with a straight cut pipe on the inner guard, but the new one had a piece of rubber passing through the guard and had a bell end flared out.
I know from commercial fan systems in buildings a bell end on the intake moves more air and less turbulence than a straight piece of duct.

You probably could run a snorkel the new hole in the guard is about 150mm in front of the old cold air intake (Toyota TRD standard)
The hole would line up with front of the heads

Nice Work, how did you bolt it in, thats the new model , was that S/c Specific ? or did it come with an assortment of pipes for Standard V6

It is off the Toyota Tacoma TRD from the US and I think is is SC.
Their engine with a SC is the same as our Hilux TRD, the body is slightly different thats why is was a bugger to fit.
I have never looked under the cowling on a standard V6 to see where the throttle body is but it probably could be adapted.
I mounted it (the air box) on rubber mounts, bolt each end with rubber in between this got it to the right height and kept it clear of the uneven inner guard shape, also had to flatten the inner guard a bit with a rubber mallet to allow it to sit without touching.
It only came with one pipe, but there is no reason why you couldn't extend it, as it has the air sensor mount on it.
It cost me $ 511.00 delivered to my door in 6 days from Frank Toyota on Ebay

I contacted Frank Motors yesterday about putting one on my TRD and they said that the Toyota engineers don't recommend fitting that modified intake with a TRD supercharger as the engine may run lean temporarily and cause the engine check light to come on.

How is yours going, any check light problems?

Gday Fellas

i am very curious to learn if in the meantime a different method, or a new toy on the market has made the 06 hilux 1grfe TRD CAI able to adapt to the firewall without having to shift the hole in the gaurd for the intake.
i have read a couple posts on tacoma world though the models do vary slightly , but adaptive techniques have been noted onn there

Ahhh , but so do i ( have a snorkel ) , but i am not a snorkel bender :D :lol:
i am working on a design to to include the CAI onto the snorkel with no restrictions from the the snorkel side and
to get that spaceship filter housing off the engine and improve the consumption + with a bonus small power increase.

I modified the bottom half of the airbox to line up with the opening so I could use my denso snorkel. The restriction is now the snorkel as after a proper flogging the vacuum indicator indicates the filter is blocked even with a clean filter. I'm not sure on pricing but psico in north Qld does airbox and snorkel setups for Raptor Supercharged Luxes so they may be a better way to go.

Hi Ben80 thanks for the info , this site is great ! the fact that everyone can share ideas and experience. I'm going to have to look for similar issues regarding my snorkel. I have the ducting out ( inside gaurd ) and the entry is bigger than the outlet . So i am going to address this in my version , and it also needs lengthening to move across to the new opening in the guard for the TRD CAI.
What you have mentioned may be related to what Gulfstream has repeatedly mentioned with a max flow venturi.

Maybe...the engine is creating its regular vacuum and the Small to Big to Small flow inside the snorkel has interrupted the air intake . it would be interesting to read the fuel mixture rate (stoichiometric) and do you have any codes or lights?

Or it could just be the air box itself...I will be using TRD CAI , i was very unsure how mods and fittings would create obstacles. It worked out the TRD CAI air box ( top and bottom ) was slightly more than the 150 on ebay for the 2.7 lt and 4.0 lt air box and i wanted the TRD plumbing also.
So thanks for posting , it has made me even more aware :ugeek: :roll:
