Hey Guys, just wondering if you have any tips on buying a handheld uhf? Which ones are good, and bad? And if anyone knows where they sell for better than normal prices, that would be great...

I got the Uniden with remote head and a separate hand held in a value pack from prestigecom.net for $347 I think. Pretty good value I thought and the postage from Perth was free.

Found it hard to get the radio alone for less than $350 apart from ebay which I'm not really a big fan of when buying expensive items.

On the recent Queenslanders Trip I gave my handheld to Mick_R for the day so he could talk to the rest of us and he was never out of range for the whole day. Sometimes we were 1.5-2km apart in really hilly terrain. Couldn't ask for much more than that. Go to this page and scroll half way down to see the radio and handheld I got.

If you’re going to get a hand held your best buying a good brand 5 watt unit you can’t go wrong with a good brand like icom. gme and uniden are good to I have been using 2 uniden UH 075's for a few years now (new model UH 078 I noticed the other day) and iv give them a hard life (hell I even dropped one half way down the weather beacon on the Hitachi building in Brisbane a good 10-15 meter drop and it still works) with any of the good 5 watters you can remove the aerial and get a plug to adapt it to and external aerial (like an in car uhf aerial) to give better range
