Dual Battery Set up

I have the exide extreme, you should be able to get it cheaper than $193. They were only $180 normal when I got mine and I got a discount from that ($145). That may save you $50.
You don't have to buy the Battery from ARB if you can find it cheaper elsewhere.

Dual Battery Set up

Hey Duges,
I have a battery supplier who keeps his eye out for what they call in the trade 'Blems' or what we all know as factory 2nds- Perfectly good batterys with marks or blemishes on the casing etc. Most major suppliers won't admit that they can supply them to you at much better prices than you would normally pay for them. But make sure you ask, if you need a battery ring around and ask the question, for the sake of 10 mins of your time and half a dozen phone calls you can save a lot of money. I also got this $220 rrp battery at an exceptional price as my company buys approx 6 batterys a month from him- and I am his contact. If anyone in south east QLD wants a good deal on batteries, contact me through private messaging and I'll see what I can do, for everybody else (if you can get the freight cheap) contact me also. Otherwise try the suggestions above.
Cheers

Dual Battery Set up

Postby Smithyworld on Thu, 16 Aug 2007 8:08 +0000

Hey All

Well dual battery is now installed. Very chuffed with myself! ARB dual battery kit installed is $700 including battery. I did it myself for $360

ARB Battery Tray $112
Deep Cycle Battery $100 (Thanks to Kazdan 69!)
Redarc Solenoid $110 (Ebay)
8DBS Starter Cable $50 from local electrician

Install time took me under 2 hours.

Here's how it turned out.

Thanks for everyones advice and knowledge. I might put up a how to do with pictures in tech section for anyone else wishing to do it. I have to say that it was pretty easy to do.

Dual Battery Set up

Postby Smithyworld on Thu, 16 Aug 2007 8:12 +0000

What are you thoughts on fuses between the batteries? A few palces I read on the internet etc said you should install a 100amp maxi fuse on the positive cable from each battery however a good point that my electrician made was that the start up battery takes about 150amp from the alternator so why would you have a 100amp fuse on there? Apparently you can't get fuses much bigger than that anyway. Any ideas? In the end I didn't install fuses.

Dual Battery Set up

Good job Smithyworld! :) That's the same setup I used.

I installed a 100A maxi fuse on each end of the positive link cable. My reasoning was that I'm no expert so just do what is recommended...

I also recently installed a dedicated fusebox next to the second battery to handle everything that comes off it. It's a lot neater than having in-line fuses on everything.

Dual Battery Set up

Postby TOMUCH on Tue, 21 Aug 2007 8:49 +0000

Hey guys, You should definately install a fuse between your batteries... The main reason for this is that should you have a short to earth.your car is protected from burning to the ground.. I read else where on here that it is not necessary to install two fuses on one line(one at each end)... this is generally true... however if that single line connects two batteries over a reasonable distance (and there any chance of rubbing through) a fuse at each end is a must.... if you only have fuse at one end and the line should rub through in the middle... you will still short the other battery... have a think about it ....I know its hard to visualise... draw your system on paper include your fuse locations then pick a point...any point on that line... if there is still a direct line between that point and and one of the two pos terminals...you will have a short to earth and possibly a fire... I hope this helps.. Cheers TOMUCH

Tomuch

All that make perfect sense to me although I still don't really understand how it would work if the cable are support 150amp at startup The numbers don't add up with 100amp fuses.

I am confused!

Dual Battery Set up

I don't think the ARB full kits for the Hilux comes with In-Line fuses for the positive Battery leads....

Is there a fuse on the factory positive cable that goes to the starter motor?

Smithy, If you have an isolator between the two batteries, then you should have no issues with the current draw... the starter current will only be drawn from the starter battery...the fuse for the aux battery will not be in that circuit... Cheers TOMUCH

oh a pic of my setup...

Woodstock ...when your refer to the heatsink are you refering to the control module? That was the only thing I had to move for this. See the attached pic. With the ARB tray it comes ready to mount the control unit on the side of the tray facing the engine.

Broke... I will do up a quick aarticle but to be honest the instruction that come with the ARB are are really detailed and make the whole process so easy. They tell you step by step what to do, what you need to move even down to the bolts to use etc.
Here is a pic of the final set up

Here is a pic with labels. Don't know whether it helps or just makes things more confusing.

Oldrev I am pretty sure its a 105 amp deep cycle battery. Kazdan69 could confirm that as he got it for me. Physically its the same size too.

Same size guys, the battery that I got Smithy is a Supercharge Allrounder, no maintenance, for people such as ourselves these are ideal as they can be used as both deep cycle for the fridge etc (105amp hour) and as a cranking battery (700CCA) ALso a lot more reasonably priced as well.
