Yes a lot of what has been said is true
You will carry it far more than you use it
But when you need one they are the tool for the job
Just be careful when using them, if you are unsure do some trial runs in the backyard on flat ground so you know how to operate it safely and become familiar with its operation
If your not prepared to stand behind our Troops
Then try standing in front of them

Keep them well lubricated and pay attention especially on the way down. Make sure the handle goes through it's full range of operation. I copped quite a nasty clip under the chin once changing a tyer on the 40 series. A good bit of gear but must be maintained and respected.
I love my ute but not as much as my dashound does!!
I just put a 3 inch exhaust on the ute, now the D4D sounds like a V4!!!

Used to use them all the time back when I was involved in competition, my own personal one has never been anything more than something else to pack so far. That said, the only part of my vehicle set up to use it is the front (factory steps and rear bumper), and I don't carry winch cable, so its uses are limited anyway.

I've used mine a few times since my last post, but I have neglected it to be honest, I've never maintained it and it has spent time rolling around in the tub (I don't have a proper mount for it either).

I really should do something about that.

I took mine out of the tub where i mounted it when the car was new, 2013 for the first time last month. Used it to get an old fence strainer post out of the ground. Doubt it will go back in the ute any time soon.

Now that you have taken it out you'll need it when you haven't got it
I haven't used mine on the car but used it on the trailer to do repairs the trailer attached to the car and picked up the back corner to work on the wheel bearing.

I used them years ago when I was inexperienced and the work cars came with them by my personal one lives in the garage. I did take it when we did the Canning as I didnt know what to expect.

The new ARB Jack looks like a nice bit of kit but I wonder if it too will suffer similar instability problems you get with standard Hi Lifts.

Anyone carry a trolley/floor jack like the yanks?
I might be wrong.

I used to, but it takes up too much room. I now carry 2 or 3 little bottle jacks (one windey and 2 hydraulic). Never had a Hi-Lift, envied them about 30 years ago but around 20 years ago started hearing a few horror stories about instability. Never really went TOOoooo far away from easy recovery situations ... mainly coz I never had the coin to replace the vehicle if things go really south.

When we lived in the NT away from services I used my Hi-Lift for tyre bead breaking quite a bit. Put the wheel under the bull bar and the jack plate on the tyre and use the jack to let the weight of the car push the bead off. They are a bit dangerous for tyre changing, and you need to be really cautious using them at all. I don’t think i used mine for vehicle recovery, a shovel and whatever was around to put under the wheel was the most common. They are useful for getting fence posts out and various things that need pressure applied in various ways. Though mine has sat in the shed for a few years now unused.
