Gen8 accessories power help needed

Postby Username_here on Mon, 08 Apr 2024 2:40 +0000

Hey guys, I have the ten or so accessories outlets available to use in the new Hilix and even little metal bits supposed to be for it but I can't for the life of me figure out how to connect them?! I try to stuff one in to the sockets on top but they're too small, probably meant for fuses(?) How do you hook up to this?
Right now I've just stuffed a UHF radio power cable in and it's powered all the time but pretty sure it's not supposed to be(?)

I want to run a power feed to pin 2 of my trailer socket for an ESC on my caravan and Hopi it can be switched off automatically with the ignition

It seems evident that you should consider getting a professional to do the job for you. If you start tapping into the loom without knowing what you're doing you can do lots of damage.

Well I'm not completely stupid, quite good with electronics etc

I was going to run a 3mm cable directly from the battery fused but considering the accessories box. I guess nobody here knows how to either

With the right tools and components, the best option is to install a designated circuit into a currently unused slot.

I haven't come across these fully yet but have done some research for my newhilux I'm going to get next year. The fuse box is one wire off the battery to the box so anything connected will be permanent power. You will need to install in you case 2 additional relays after the fuse box 1 switched when ignition on for your ESC and 2nd switched when ignition on for your radio. Other stuff like say a light in the back of the ute needs power all the time so you don't need a relay
Remember the fuse box is so you can have just one wire off the battery instead of 10 with fuses hanging off them.
The part number I think is pzq8589880 so do google and you should find the install manual
I love hybrid cars - means more fuel for me

If you are going to run 10 accessories I would be running a heavier gauge wire 3mm may be to light and yes a fuse at the battery the standard wiring is to light to tap in to.

Crimp the wire from your accessory into the female fuse receiver then push the receiver up into the fuse block from below. you will need to pull the fuse block out from the holder to do this. Note that the fuse block is rated to a max of 50A so all your accessories added together cannot exceed 50A.
You can purchase a second block to go into the blank space beside.
3mm wire is way too thin.

Thanks Timbo, this makes sense now

I'm reading other ESC users (AL-KO ESC) installing 3mm wire with no troubles so assume it doesn't draw much current

The ALKO ESC requires a direct battery (not ign switched) connection with 30A in line fuse so must draw up to 25A under normal operating conditions.
Most ESC fitted vehicles and vans have the red 50A Anderson Connector for it so it can be hot connected and easily disconnected when doing dirt roads and tracks while still having other lights and brake functions working.
For that run to reduce voltage drop you would need to use at a minimum 6mm auto or preferably 8 AWG cable.

I ended up using a 4mm to pin 2. 30a fuse can be easily disconnected as Anderson suggestion.
Hopefully be ok, I know someone who used a 3mm without worry so we'll see. I took it for a half hour drive over the weekend and no problem, take it only larger current is drawing when ESC engaged momentarily. Otherwise we're talking only milliamps when not engaging. Cannot find anything about actual current draw anywhere

Found this little article which says my wiring is a tad overkill https://www.etrailer.com/question-23676 ... or%20years.
