Can you change to a vinyl steering wheel on an SR5?

Postby Timbo1980 on Mon, 21 Aug 2023 11:15 +0000

Hi all,

The leather steering wheel on my 2013 SR5 has worn through and I was wondering if its possible to 'downgrade' to a vinyl SR steering wheel for better wear properties etc?

I am pretty sure I can swap all of the steering wheel controls over but I am not sure if the SR5 clockspring is compatible with the SR steering wheel? The SR5 clockspring is different and includes a position sensor for the stability control. An auto sparkie told me he didn't think the vinyl wheel would work with the SR5 clockspring. Does anybody know if this is the case?

Cheers!

If all the wiring is the same and plugs straight into each other you think it should work as you said you will use the guts out of your wheel

Thanks mate, yeah that's what I was thinking too, but given the clocksprings are different between an SR5 and SR I wasn't sure if the SR5 clockspring would not fit in with the SR wheel?

Hi all,

In case anyone was interested I can confirm you can 'downgrade' the SR5 steering wheel from leather to plastic.

I bought a near new workmate steering wheel and swapped all of the electricals, buttons, cruise control etc, over from my SR5 steering wheel. So I have all of the same stereo and phone controls as before. Very happy with the result as plastic suits me and my work much better than leather.

Cheers.
