General discussion of basically anything Hilux related

suddenly not starting

Postby rash on Fri, 18 Aug 2023 10:55 +0000

Got a 2006 1KD manual sr hilux, has always started first touch of the key.

Last couple of starts, it didnt start first touch, had to hit it again but fired up straight away, not sure if coincidence or not..

Fuel light came on the other day, but i just drove it home as usual as I live around the corner from BP servo. would just fill it next time I go out. should have had plenty of kms before empty.
That arvo, jump in to go to servo and wont start. winds over super fast, but no sign of firing up.
Thinking perhaps it sucked air from a low tank as I shut it off earlier?
I jerry canned 20ltrs diesel into the tank, primed the pump till hard - no start. repeated this a few times and gave up for the day.
so far, I've tried priming over and over. I've disconnected the battery for 15mins and reconnected. checked the fuses in engine bay. put a cheap scan tool on it with no codes found. flashy red light on the dash goes off with ignition on.

Injectors were replaced about 5000k ago, fuel filter replaced since then also.

Not sure what to try next..
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Ash.

A little bit of "Horse has Bolted" here, but maybe next time fill up on way home instead. In the mean time, try throwing in a couple more jerries and then prime the piss out of it before wasting battery. Maybe even put it on charge overnight before you attempt it all.
Not sure of your model, but some diesel engines will need you to bleed injector lines before attempting a start after the primer has been pumped to pressure.

The injector pump is the only fuel pump on that Hilux and you need to somewhat prime it as you have done. The primer will become hard to prime when the lines are primed. I suggest you check that you're getting fuel beyond the primer.
I might be wrong.

so, with ignition off, ive pulled the return line after the injector pump, elevated it above the primer, and pumped the primer button. Diesel flows out while pumping, so its definitely getting fuel from the tank..

Ive been reading a thread about someone with same symptoms, who could get it running by pulling apart the integration relay and cleaning the contacts. Just need to find where this relay is so i can give it a try. apparently it powers the ecu.

Bit of an update..
Had a mate bring a scan tool around to check for fuel pressure. but the car refused to talk to it while it was cranking over..

He brought a second scan tool today after i had the battery on charge all day, and with the scan tool plugged in, the engine started... Mate said he had seen that happen on another hilux, where the scan tool was actually bridging 2 earths together and that there was a loose earth on the firewall.

fuel pressure was up and down a bit at idle, between 31000 and 36000.
turned it off and unplugged scanner - no start.
Plugged scanner back in - no start..
frustrating.
Tries to start with startyabastard.
it is now also throwing a code for turbo VNT controller also. P1264

After all that, maybe do what you should have done first, check the drain on the fuel filter... Make sure there's only diesel in there... Next work through the system by pumping the primer on the filter with the outlet hose off, fuel should flow freely when pumping.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

i opened the tap on the filter early on to find diesel coming out. also had the outlet off while pumping, and had diesel flowing.
We did get it running once with the scan tool plugged in and it sounded as it should have, which told us that the problem was most likely electrical.
There was a good final outcome though. While cranking it over, my mate noticed a spark down at the starter motor.. On further looking, we found that the starter bolts were loose, and one of them had the earth strap to it. Tightened them up securing the earth and it fired up first touch of the key. I know that the guy i got it off a couple of years back had the box out to do a rear main seal.. maybe didn't tighten the bolts??
Best thing is, the problem is clearly not going to be an intermittent thing that causes me to lose trust in the lux :D

Amazing how sometimes we look for something that's not there just because we get a preconceived idea in our head! Good to hear it all went well in the end.

Almost always the thing that you least suspect is the cause of the problem ;)
