Adding weight under tray to prevent back losing traction?

Postby SteveD1984 on Mon, 11 Apr 2022 12:33 +0000

I've got a single cab with a Toyota aluminium tray (board type). I want a steel tray just for the weight but I can't find one in Perth that's cheap enough. Questions... if I keep this tray:

1. Will this aluminium tray fall to bits on long corrugated roads?

2. What are some ideas on how to add weight to the back of the vehicle (under the tray). I don't have the tray sides on most of the time so adding heavy weights under the tray would be good to keep the back from sliding out in the wet. How much weight do I need to add to the back for this ute to not be sketchy in wet weather? Currently its lethal.

Re your question 1, I've had an aluminium tray for the past 4 years on my current Hilux, and for 8 years on the previous one. Used mainly for outback travel - Simpson, Canning, Cape, Birdsville and the like - and neither tray has shown any sign of falling apart !!

Is yours the standard board type one or a custom welded type? Doesn't it rattle like mad?

Cheers

De Ja Vu. This same question was answered just a few days ago somewhere else on the forum. The main thing that seemed to come out it was to suggest adding weight in a useful way by actually carrying something you might use. There was plenty of varying suggestions in the thread and I'd tell you where it is ... If I could find it again. :) :) :)

Just standard, and while the vehicle does have the odd squeak at times, the tray certainly doesn't "rattle like mad" ;)

Lovely to learn something new. Gotts say, "View your posts" is the tip of the day for me. :)

<Edit> Just took a quick look at that page, pretty cool.

Any of them Gipsy, I went through all my old posts last night looking right back to my very first post. Interesting to see some of them again. Really good to know that if I ever win lotto and get a newer Hilux, I'll be able to go ... "what was the name of that Interior Light bloke in Iceland?" Instead of looking through the whole forum I'll just go back through my own posts now.

<Edit> It was Jaka and it was Finland. Still really loving the light I get out of this thing. :) :) :) Only took me a few moments to look it up.
