engine runs really rough

Hi all ... i have a 2007 hilux extra cab thats causing me a massive headache .. my issue is that the motor will run and start fine for a few days or even weeks then i will go to start it and it will run as rough as , blow a heap of smoke until i turn it off ... i will let it sit for a bit then it will start and purr like a kitten .. the motor has only done 10000 klms as the old motor cracked a piston ... this motor has new injectors , turbo etc ... i had this fault on the old engine and it has come back to haunt me ... i feel that it has to be something electrical as all the fuel system has been checked .. any advice would be very appreciated ..

How long since the last service? Oil, filters etc. Just thinking out loud here.

It just sounds a lot like dirty fuel, fuel filter, water in the diesel. Something along these lines. Blocked or clogged up air filter, . It amazes me how often even the best mechanics forget to do even the most basic things.
