Fwiw I've only been changing the oil because a good mechanic told me when I originally bought the car: just change the oil and you'll be good to go. It's a Hilux! Not realising he probably meant the atf too..

The lifetime of the transmission ends when the fluid is no longer capable of doing the job.
Shoot the tech help people of penrite an email and ask them what they think of lifetime fluid.
It amazes me how many people on this forum change the engine oil at half the australian and a third of the NZ recomended interval but believe the dealers never change transmission fluid. IF the engone oil would last out the warranty period they would call that lifetime as well.
Back in the seventies hypoid diffs never needed oil changes but now after oil has evolved beyond all expectations the dealers recomend new oil every 40k.

Gipsy wrote:Rob, and more importantly... username, I once had a Mercedes 280SEL and after getting the auto transmission 'serviced' by a 'professional' even though I told him the Benz required a special fluid, he argued naa any old dexron type 3 will be fine... Next week and 400klms from nowhere the tranny, you guessed it... Crapped itself all over the road thanks to the wrong fluid and a shonky 'professional'. The lesson is... Always use the correct ATF and NEVER TRUST A PROFESSIONAL. Cost me several thousand for a rebuild and the tranny specialist tells me a commodore would have cost heaps more! So much for Mercedes being expensive to fix... This was the only time it ever let me down in 10years. But the next owner had a great car and paid next to nothing for it. I bet it's still running fine after another 20years! As Martyn suggests, use penrite synthetic ATF FS and refresh it every couple of years especially if there's any sign of overheating or discolouration. FS is Toyota type 1V equivalent.
