Buying a blown 1kd

The pickup was spotless when I pulled the motor apart yesterday, The injectors were pretty caked but nothing too bad.

As for the mods..

Theres some modified pistons you can buy through a mob called G&L Performance

They do a modified, forged, coated piston upgrade which fixes the risk for cracking.

Currently the plan is to also

- Stronger pistons
- Balance shaft delete
- Hi-Flow Turbo

And it should fly for 500,000kms

All sounds good, but I'd suggest doing a "History Check" on after-market components that are so integral to what you're doing. The reason I say this involves a little story of my own history:
Rebuilt a VW Kombi years ago and swapped out the original engine for a "Cheaper" Brazillian engine. Fitted it up with Hot-Dogs and Extractors, sounded absolutely awesome. At 18 - 19 years old It used to stand up when I took off from the lights, it was great. Yeah, I should've run it in before dancing it around, but the Brazillian engine only lasted a couple of months. Luckily Dad was there to talk me into replacing it with a 3 speed 78 Patrol instead of a Porsche engine changeover or I might not've been here to pass on the story.

There used to be a Kombi in Newcastle with BBC a P76 4.4L V8 in it. It was still pretty slow though due to weight, but he used to pour milk on the tyres and do burnouts with it at the Kooragang drag strip! My 1974 FJ40 with a 327 from a HK in it used to lift the front wheels off the ground. Used to beat all the local hot 4cyl cars of the day like turbo Lasers etc.

They were pretty quick cars as they were light and AWD, road tests show them as good for a 15.5s quarter. Not many Australian cars on the road in the early 90’s were quicker than that. Took a GT-HO, HK-HG GTS327/350, Charger E38/49/55, pre-pollution SLR5000/SS 5.0L or one of the GroupA Holdens to be faster than that. Or one of the higher output HDT or HSV cars.

It will be fine, these guys have been going around for quite awhile now. And alot of high performance builders swear by them also. So its a win in my book

I spoke to that mob, they use a factory piston and machine it to suits your application. over 2k in pistons alone, then add rings.

Sounds like the 2015+ pistons are the safer bet.

Yeah, it wasn't the only vehicle I was sorry to let go of. Had my nuts dropped earlier I might even still have a few of them.

Anyone been to the Birdwood museum? Well worth the effort. In the Adelaide Hills.

I was in there about 2 years ago, finally got them to open the bonnet on the WB Kingswood sedan. Glad I did as it is chassis number AWB00001A. They are building a new wing to house all the remaining GMH and Holden records, so looks like I will have a lot more trips and time to spend in South Australia. I still have some big holes in my research to fill.

Yep I was there about then too, the wb Kingswood had a broken bonnet catch cable so it was closed. The whole row from the fj ute right through to the Leyland p76 and the sandman once sat in my driveway. And the little Austin a30 with the surfboard on top, and the vw beetle. Watched Peter Brock race the a30 with a Holden red motor too.
