Advice on buying 2005 Petrol 4x4 Hilux with 30,000km Issues?

Postby MikeD1987 on Wed, 28 Oct 2020 12:19 +0000

I'm looking at a 2005 Petrol 4x4 Hilux SR5 with 30,000km (not an error, literally done only 30,000km). Its at a Toyota dealer and has had an inspection/service, however I am just wondering if there is anything specific that would be wrong with it after sitting for so long, being a 2005 and all. Anything I should get them to double check before I buy?

Its completely original. They are putting new tires on it.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Fluids, belts and other perishables. Some seals may have perished but you'll never know until you drive it for a while or 200,000 plus kms.
I might be wrong.

2005 SR Hilux 1KD - SOLD
2009 BMW X5 - destroyed by a hail storm
2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 - SOLD
2015 Ford Ranger

Get the ATF flushed before you take ownership. I wouldn’t buy it though unless it was a bargain, would buy a later one. From about 2012-13 the SR got most of the SR5 stuff worth having (like ABS, all airbags), with the SR5 mostly being useless fluff you throw away like the rear step, side steps and the “roll” bar. The ADD is probably the only SR5 thing worth having. Some of the later SR even got flares and SR5 tub.

Mike, ask the dealer if it has logbooks and check the frequency of servicing. That might tell you if the vehicle has been regularly serviced or if it is a vehicle with a smash-repair history. I was referred to the previous owner of the last 2nd hand vehicle I bought and the dealer was happy to provide their contact details. Also, some years ago I traded a Pajero on a new commodore and the Pajero only had 11 thousand ks and brand new off-road tyres and the dealer referred the next buyer to me to ask why it had new tyres and low kms. I reassured him it was genuine and I just traded because my circumstances had changed and I needed a commodore instead of the Pajero. ;)
I might add, the new buyer called me as soon as I arrived home, and bought the car the afternoon that I traded it. No they're not always too good to be true, but sometimes they are!

Is it the xtra cab on Carsales in WA? It is near $30k plus transfer etc? My 2010 dual cab auto was $46000 driveaway new! Lot of $ for a 15 year old car.

Someone else mentioned smash repairs, also wouldn't hurt to look for sign of having had a bath at the beach ... or the like. Only 30K on a 15 year old vehicle? The dealer should have a pretty good reason? Not my business I know, but I'd sure like to hear that story?

Yes Rob that was the reason I mentioned the smash repairs possibility, often repairers build a new car out of salvage vehicles and make them look like new. It's not illegal so long as the chassis wasn't written off. There could be signs of something not looking quite right in one of those!

HiYa Gipsy, yeah, my current hilux is one of them. It's had a hit in the front right corner and even still has the NRMA Lifetime repairs guarantee in the glove box. The drivers door will "drip" leak in heavy rain and I've tried to track down someone to talk to at NRMA about it, but no-one seems to wanna take that call. I was just mentioning the "Bath at the Beach" thing because there's plenty of pics on the internet about that stuff.
