My bet would be in the minds of hundreds ... or even thousands of "LOCAL" mechanics or wreckers yards. In my experience, once an engine goes, it's a relatively small percentage that get get it fixed. Most of the vehicles would end up at wreckers or sold cheap to someone who knows how to replace an engine and then make a few coins out of the job.
Toyota will only hear about vehicles still under warranty ... if the owner chooses to go there.
Just a thought.

I would agree Hiluxxury compared to the total numbers of 1kd out there, the actual instances of cracked pistons is infinitesimal and because it's sensational it gets a lot of attention for a small number. It would, however be interesting to get a handle on the real numbers and the conditions under which they failed. True, many happened after warranty, and those in warranty but denied resolution by Toyota, but I'm sure the real details are out there somewhere, probably as Rob says, the mechanics and rebuilders but most who suffered cracked pistons wouldn't admit the truth in the circumstances. Toyota didn't change the design for no reason so I'm sure they would be aware of the weakness in pistons!
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

Looking through the listings on partsouq for the KUN26R models that were destined for Australia, below are some of the production dates for the various sub-models (KUN26R-CRMDYQ3, KUN26R-PRMDYQ3 etc):

02.2005 - 07.2011
02.2007 - 07.2011
07.2011 - 04.2015
11.2013 - 04.2015
09.2014 - 04.2015

This isn't a complete list.
I might be wrong.

2005 SR Hilux 1KD - SOLD
2009 BMW X5 - destroyed by a hail storm
2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 - SOLD
2015 Ford Ranger
