2011 Hilux strange problems

Postby wbute on Sat, 25 Jan 2020 6:06 +0000

Hi, I have a 2011 SR5 4WD Hilux. I’ve owned it since 2013. It has 294000km on it and I do around 50000km a year in it at the moment.
Today I left home at 4:30, LED driving lights on and the entertainment centre started to flick onto the bright setting that’s normally when the lights are off. Then it started to turn off and re-start. Then the battery light came on. I turned the driving lights off and the issue went away. So I assumed the battery or alternator was on the way out. However no issues from the battery all day. It has started fine
Then the auto wouldn’t shift down under load properly (I was towing a trailer). Next the AC started to cut out under load on big hills and it seemed to lose a heap of power on hills. The auto wouldn’t shift properly even when shifted manually.
The viscous fan has been running more than it used to for quite a while when I think about too
Any suggestions? Auto about yo shit itself, motor about to lunch itself?
It’s a D4D by the way.

Don't you wish they would just stop it makes it easier to find out what wrong.
I said that you have a electrical short same where.

Good luck

Yeah it would be easier!
It’s been a great car up until now. 294K isn’t bad, doesn’t use oil and I’ve never had the injectors serviced. I have religiously serviced it though. If the engine dies from here on I reckon it’s given fair service.

Sounds like more than just one problem. The viscous fan isn't electrical it's probably the engine/radiator overheating! The electrical problems seem to be related to overloaded system or not enough power from the alternator. Gearbox problems a combination of electrical and overheating transmission which could be related to engine overheating, so many issues to resolve there! The AC going off is also related to overheating. Get a scanguage and watch for temperature in the engine.

I should add, no change in engine temp on the gauge. As soon as I felt the AC go off I looked at the gauge. I have changed the coolant about 6 months ago.
I realise the fan is oil filled viscous and think it’s probably just worn out and not related. I also have an oil cooler fitted to the transmission.

The light on the dash is only an alternator warning light, although it has a battery symbol it does not mean the battery is faulty, so many people put a new battery in when they see it, battery companies love it. If that light is on there is a good chance the alt has failed, i have seen cases when it is on but still charging fine in that model but that is an internal alternator fault within the regulator. The light will not always come on if there is a fault in the alt circuit.
All i can suggest is look at the places where multiple circuits come together like fusebox supplies from the battery terminal and body earth from the battery. See if the voltage is the same within a few tenths of a volt directly at the alternator and at the battery with the engine idling, is the voltage 13 or above with a few revs?
Low voltage will play havoc with all systems but doesnt mean the fault is battery or alternator, make sure the alt is working first, load it up with lights and ac and do voltage checks with a few revs.

Don't rely on the temperature gauge it's an idiot gauge which isn't much better than an idiot light. You need a scanguage for more accurate readings in real time. If you changed the coolant check for an airlock, it won't show on the dash gauge. Run the engine up to temperature and turn the heater on full and park the car nose up on a higher angle to burp the system. Let it run for a while and check the coolant reservoir to see if it goes down.

If you turned the led lights off and the electrical problems stopped it's probably a good sign there's a problem in the lights wiring.

The battery has died. I am tipping the alternator not charging and a voltage issue. The charge light did flicker on for about 5 seconds today after I jump started it.
As for Toyota temp gauges, I have always found them to be pretty reliable. We have had Hiluxs , Landcruisers and Prado for over 40 years and not one has had a temp gauge issue.

It's not a matter of good or bad temp gauge but the scanguage is accurate in digital format. By the time you see the dash gauge in the red it's probably well over 120c

Sounds like your battery maybe the electrical problems if a cell has collapsed it may start the engine but is liable to have a short which means the battery has died. Try another reliable battery and see if the problem has gone.

I had similar problem in my 2012 SR5. Dead alternator.

Was the alternator. All good so far with it replaced and new battery.
