Air con power & Leg room for V6 4x4 single cab?

Postby Jmos on Sun, 19 Jan 2020 10:56 +0000

Hello all,

I'm looking into the V6 4L petrol single cab 4x4 auto SR or maybe SR5 if I can find one for touring, just wan't to get a good idea what the air con cooling power is like on a hot 40 degree day? I drive a 2000 petrol Pajero and it's air con is good enough if that helps. The heater on the paj is scary good...
And what about leg room for a 6Ft tall person? Can I stretch my legs out while driving? I find my pajero only has comfy leg room if i put the seat right back almost to the point only kids could sit in second row seats. But being a single cab it doesn't look like you can slide seat back much. Also not interested in extra cab.

thanks
Jmos

I don’t think there was ever an SR5 single cab. I am 6’5” and have a 2011 SR5 V6 dual cab, I bought it over an Xtra cab as there were no auto V6 extra cab and no single cab SR5 V6 auto. I only bought SR5 as I wanted ABS and side air bags.
As for leg room, the dual cab has plenty, but the seats are awful for long distances. I used to get a sore @rse within 100km. I fitted a Recaro Ergomed driver’s seat and it slides back to almost touch the rear seat. You wouldn’t have this much adjustment on a single cab though. Having sat in a few ‘79 series cruiser and Nissan Patrol utes, their legroom is terrible for me and the single cab Hilux would be no better.

As for aircon, I have driven to Melbourne and Adelaide in mine (from Lake Macquarie) in days we’ll over 40deg with no issues, and I hate heat with a passion, my aircon is on cold 365 days a year, even on 12deg days in winter. If the inside of the car is warmer than the outside I can’t stand it - this is why all my Mrs’ cars have had dual zone climate, so I can have my side on minimum when hers is on 24deg. Her Lexus has heated or cooled seats so as you can imagine my side is always on cool!

Just a word of warning, manual V6’s are not very nice to drive. When you say touring I assume you’ll have some load? I do not like diesels at all, way to underpowered for my liking, but I’d have a diesel manual or auto Hilux over a manual V6 Hilux. Drive both manual and auto V6 and you’ll see what I mean. I’m pretty sure the manuals are tuned for less torque too somehow, even the sales brochures show it in the figures. Probably the clutches can’t handle it. You can feel it when you drive one, you’ll wear your left leg out changing gears. I grew up with manual 6cyl and V8 Holden and Chevys. I reckon I’d be changing gears three times as much in a manual V6 Hilux than I ever did in an old 6cyl 4spd Holden.

It looks like you could get a V6 auto single cab SR up until 2011 (MY10), no more after the 2012 facelift. Looks the same for manual V6 as well although you could get an SR5 V6 manual extra cab up until the facelift for 2012 (starts about 9/11 production).

Agree the seats are not great, but I upgraded both my front seats through these guys https://www.facebook.com/proseatauto/, cost me about $1600 installed for both seats and the centre console lid. Completely remodelled seats, lumbar bladders and whatever colour leather/stitching combo you want. They're built on original frames for your make vehicle, so no need to modify rails etc = no engineer certification required. Long drives got a LOT easier, and my wife loves them. Win.

That's a shame, would have been worth a look. Been looking at a Sahara converted into a dual cab and might be nice not to have to fork out for more Recaros!

I had the same seats done here in NZ (They reupholster the factory frames) unfortunately they were a fair bit more $$ over here
I found them a bit narrow in the shoulders, but I am fairly wide across the top not to mention the waste   There's not much room in the cab to make them any wider
But they were a huge improvement over stock
If your not prepared to stand behind our Troops
Then try standing in front of them
