2006 KUN26 1KD Water Pump

Hello,

Was just wondering when replacing the water pump do you usually replace the housing at the same time? Or just the pump itself.

Cheers.

Depends on why you are replacing it mate, if the telltale is leaking just the pump, if the housing is leaking both.

Replace the whole unit with the newer 2 piece pump.
Fairly big job which is usually done when you do the timing belt. That's because you have to remove the whole timing belt cover (front and rear) to get the single piece pump assembly off.

Plenty of discussion on changing water pumps and the updated two piece housing design about eg:

Best to get a genuine toyota part as you wont have to worry about replacing your aftermarket part with a genuine one later.
I might be wrong.

I thought they were all two-piece?

I actually thought it was two-piece already but I had a look last night and sure enough, it's a complete unit. So by two-piece, you mean something along the lines of https://www.onlineautoparts.com.au/products/ZPN-03710 ? I was told the timing belt kit had already been done when I purchased the vehicle and that was only 20,000KM ago. Would you say it is still worth doing it again? I understand most people will recommend genuine I, however, do not really have the budget for it. Thanks for the info.

Hi MoneyPit,
The one shown in the link is the newer 2 piece unit that replaces the original 1 piece part that was fitted.
Replacing the timing belt , tensioner, and belt pulley, is a separate job from the water pump, however, in order to get the original 1 piece pump off, you have to pull off the timing belt cover ( front and rear) to get access to the bolts that hold the water pump on.
The timing belt replacement is a fairly easy job, because you only need to remove the front cover. Getting the water pump off is a whole new ball game requiring the removal of the timing belt cam pulley so you can get the rear cover off.
I expect if you were told the timing belt was done, thats all they would have done, because its pretty easy.
The timing belt fitted should be fine to put back on, just check for wear and contamination from oil leaks etc. They are a cheap item anyway. so go for a new one.
Plenty of info on this site about the best way to do the job.

Thank you so much mate for your knowledge and help. I ended up getting a full Matsumo timing belt kit and this pump. Found a bunch of information to follow on the forum as you stated and jobs done. Really appreciate the help thanks.
