A few questions and what I know so far...

Postby fkrois on Mon, 26 Aug 2019 4:44 +0000

Hi there,

I am a new Hilux owner (used to have a Navara).
I got a used 2006 Hilux Double Cab with about 190k KM on the clock this year.
It is in perfect non rusting condition (very important to me since I lost the Navara to frame rust and rot).

I have already done a few things here and there but I am stuck with 2 major (for me) topics and one side-note-question.
Let me put down my questions with my assumptions with what I have found out. Please correct, help, or criticise at all times.

1) "The Side-Note-Question": Does my truck have OBD-II?
Looking at the port and connecting an adapter my instinct would have been - sure! Also based on the production year of 2006 I had assumed since 2003 or so it would have been mandatory. The more I google and research the more I am unsure. The actual first date of registration for my car is 11/2006 (2,5l D4D 4WD Double Cab). So it was built in the months leading up to that. I can check when exactly if it makes any difference.
The adapter I connected was not able to communicate with the car in any way.
So OBD-II yes or no?

2) My Clutch and it's noises...
To sum it up it runs great. I can't say it feels like something is wrong. But the noises. There are 2 distinct noises that bother me.
a) When I press or release the clutch pedal it squeaks. Like really not nice. I can't exactly nail it down to when it does or doesn't happen but on somedays (based on heat and or humidity) it doesn't make that noise.
b) When cruising in gear off the accelerator I hear a faint rattling noise. I was first convinced it was the prop shaft centre bearing and after I just replaced that (yay me!!) the noise is still here. Good learning experience but it didn't help with the noise. Funny enough. If I touch the clutch for even a mm while the noise is here it disappears completely.
Any ideas here?

3) My arch-enemy! AC!
So, this truck is not fitted with an AC. For what ever reason this one came without.
Very simple question, what do you guys think. Adding an AC. Is it doable? Should I opt for all the parts Toyota would have had in a different Hilux or have my mechanic just do what he feels is right?
I would like ideas here too!

That's all :)
Thank you all in advance!

Hi again Fabio

For your side note - it appears that OB-II protocol came in 2007 for the hilux
Have a read here: 2005-2006 Smart Gauge

I'm not familiar with manual/clutch but sounds like your thrust bearing has gone

AC? Totally doable at a cost. Have a chat with your local Toyota dealer. Might be worth going to an air con specialist too for a comparative quote

sorry for the late reply, full week ;)
Thank you for your insight!

So the ODB2 is done. Thx for the Smart Gauge link, but at this point I would say not worth it to me.

Regarding the clutch, looks like we need a new one. But already talked to my guy, doesn't seem to be a big thing to do.

AC I will have a chat with out Toyota here. They are just very very VERY expensive for everything. I just replaced the propeller shaft center bearing ... they wanted 330 € for it (that is only part with tax). Got a lovely aftermarket one for 35 € and it works like a beast! But we will see!

Thx!

No problem.
Yep - Toyo are expensive here too

Clutch did well to make it to 190k if it hasn't been replaced before
Some guys only manage 50k from a clutch :o

Centre bearing support brackets were recalled in Australia (2005-2010 models) for an upgrade due to failure

Curious to know if Europe got the extra support bracket component or if it was just Australias rough tracks that warranted it

So it is the first clutch and it did 196k KM so far. Haven't gotten to having it changed. But it doesn't seem to be a big thing. Aftermarket complete clutch sets go for 200 - 300 € here.

Regarding the center bearing...it was dated and it was the first on from 06. Not surprised, it is subject to tons of rotations..obviously.

All in all I love what great condition a truck like that is in after 13 years! And we get tons of snow and salt every year here.

In Oz the AC units were installed here in Oz as part of PD aka they were not shipped with the AC or atleast not a complete unit. I don’t know if it was all of them or just some of them.
Found this out as I spent a week fitting canopy’s to utes on site at toyota PD in Sydney and got thrown into a shed with the AC guy.
All he did day in day out was drive brand new cars in and fit the gear to the ute.

Be interesting to know if you have the evaporator core in the dash already or if it also needs to be installed?

As for clutch definitely sounds like throwout bearing. But by the time you strip down to that point with nearly 200k on clock you would be mad not to do it while your in there.
Don’t forget to inspect the flywheel and have it machined if need be (assuming it can be machined) as if it’s heat streaked/cracked highly advisable to repair while in there.
Check rear seal too.
