Sobering example of exceeding GVW of car or trailer or GCM

Postby HK1837 on Wed, 26 Jun 2019 10:23 +0000

Shows you what you might expect to happen to you after a big oops if you are exceeding your vehicle's or trailer's GVW or the total GCM. I know the fact people died is almost certainly the major concern for the driver rather than the fines for overloading, but it would appear the overloading may well have contributed to the accident or the severity of it. As I said a real world example of what may happen if you have a heavy van and expect to tow it with a lightweight like a Prado, Hilux or other smaller tow vehicle or dual cab.

Thanks for sharing that. I think about this stuff everytime I put on my 33s for a trip... I don't know what I'd do if someone died because I couldn't stop in time.

While we have rights in this great country, we also have responsibilities.
I might be wrong.

After reading all the charges I wonder if the overloaded vehicle was the cause or just one in the chain of offenses?
There isn't much detail about why the vehicle crashed but overloading appears to be one of the contributing factors.
A healthy warning to all of us, and oversize tyres coupled with overloading can cause a very unsafe situation and possible consequences.
I would think a caravan on the back of a Prado with four adults onboard is a recipe for disaster

I agree, it lacks context. Hopefully the coroner's report will tease out what happened.

Agree, but the fact he was charged with exceeding weights won’t help the other charges especially if they are contributory. Plus I bet his Insurance(s) are now voided as well due to the charges.

I think the third party insurance covers his passengers for injury but his vehicle and caravan are history.

Not just his stuff that was damaged. His Insurance would normally also cover other cars, Armco, road, houses, power pole etc. He’ll be up for all of that too. Plus only some NSW Greenslips provide at-fault driver coverage. So if he was injured and culpable he may be in trouble with medical coverage. But that is the case even in a straight accident.
