Clock spring

Postby CHUTCH on Mon, 18 Mar 2019 5:06 +0000

Hi guys,

It appears that my clock spring in my 2012 sr5 has shat itself, the horn stopped working but still works when the wheels are turned.

Wasnt there a recall on these a few years ago??

Spoke to the local toyota dealership and they want just over $1k for a replacement..

Any ideas on getting a replacement part cheaper?

There was a recall for hilux clock springs!

Toyota refused to repair mine because my vin didn't fall in the "affected" vehicles, although it had the very same issue and reason they were doing the recall. Total BS.

In this situation. Your local wrecker is your friend, try to get ones from the 13+ models. Don't buy cheap eBay ones as they will fail in 6 months (I should know... I did that myself)

Surely anything you get from a wrecker would be the same faulty product??
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

I got a replacement item from partsouq, $135US delivered. Fairly straightforward to replace, lots of youtube videos around that step you through it.

But I literally just got off the phone to my local and its half what you were quoted.......also had to get new cruise control switch ( busted with knee) and a bloody interior door handle cable......and needless to say, mine wasnt on a recall for clockspring either :?

I had mine done, 2012 SR5, and it was like having to give up my left arm. You can try and ask for a "Out of warranty" repair/replacement.

I had to pay 100% labour and 50% on the part itself. Some saving is better than nothing.

BUT BEWARE!!!

Check your VIN number and the part!!! There were two different clock springs to suit my car, it come down to one digit in the part number. One was $200, and the other was $600 from memory. You can fit the cheaper one, but it may not work. And of course, it is an electrcial item, no credit.

I ended up going for a after market part, time will tell. Cost $200 fitted. We will see.

SC162 wrote:Try using the words "out of warranty repair", my old '05 model had the clockspring go before it became a recall item, toyota dealer quoted my around $800, rang back two days later after reading online that others had it repaired and asked if they had heard of doing it as an out of warranty repair. Right then and there she booked me in for the following week, $800 saved. Did annoy me that they were prepared to charge me that much money when they knew full well they could do it for free

Something I had posted in another thread, thought I'd put it up here in case anyone else comes across the issue. This was before the recall and they still done it for free

I did an ebay job about 2 years ago and now airbag light has finally come on. Would this affect the airbags, last thing I want is dodgey safety?

My clock spring failed in 2013 or 2014 before the recall. I brought this up to the dealership in Townsville saying that any failure of SRS system is unacceptable no matter what the warranty says. I then had it replaced for free. The dealership also did another replacement during the recall.

This certainly will affect the airbag bud i had the exact same issue the other week when my replacement clock spring that i bought off ebay as "genuine" in a genuine looking box. I just bit the bullet and bought one from toyota $570 later would hope it lasts. No point in chansing airbag safety to dodgy counterfeit parts again
