Excessive fuel consumption - 2012 D4D Hilux

Postby Rick111 on Wed, 06 Mar 2019 7:46 +0000

Hi guys, I have done a search on the site but can't find anything to do with excessive fuel consumption. I have just bought a 2012 D4D hilux auto and I am constantly getting 13-14.5 liters per hundred klms around town & not much better on the highway. I do have a alloy canopy, bullbar, brushbars, sidesteps, winch, dual batteries, 3" exhaust, std tyres. What I would like to know is what should I be looking to check for that would explain such high consumption? Do I just need a tune up? Any info would be great!

Excessive fuel consumption - 2012 D4D Hilux

I’d start with s fresh air filter followed by a good clean of the airflow meter. But hey, while the bonnet is up you may as well remove the entire intake system after the turbo and clean all of that pcv oil out of the ducting and intercooler, strip out the egr and inlet manifold and get REAL busy cleaning 7 years of that beautiful soot and oil blend that is caked to the inside followed by fitting up a provent to stop the fun from happening again.

Or just accept 14l/100k

You've probably added near to 400kg to it, and standard as autos they do maybe 11-12L/100 at best around town. My mate's 2011 averaged 11.9L/100 when it was dead standard.

Mine D4D manual is about 2400kg and gets 10l/100kms on 31in tyre and 11.5l/100kms on 33in tyres. There has been a fair bit of variation reported here on this forum. But as above clean the MAF sensor and MAP filter along with an intake manifold clean.

Next step is to get techstream hooked up.

Lots of info here on all of the above.
I might be wrong.

Get a diagnostic done on the injectors to see if they are in spec. It’s not an expensive job. Fuel consumption goes through the roof when they are on the way out.

i also have a dead standard auto, but i get fairly decent mileage from mine...on average i get between 10.5km/l - 11.5km/l which converts to somewhere around 9.5l/100km to 8.7l/100km...i do the calculation every time i top up at the diesel pump. This includes town, traffic and highway driving (mostly 80km/h). However, i'll add that i do try to be as smooth/economical a driver as i can be most times and i'm from a small Caribbean island so my traffic jams and highway drivings may be comparatively shorter than what you all are used to.

with all the extra weight your fuel consumption has expectedly increased, but it does seem a bit high nonetheless. Best to get a scan/diagnostic as suggested above to see if anything shows ups and probably the maf and egr/intake system clean to help with any soot build up
