How to tell if SR or SR5

Hi,
My son and I are after another hilux and are amazed at how many SR's are up for sale as SR5's.As another check, can you tell by the I.D. plate what model it is? I have done a bit of research but cant find the answer. Current interest is in a 2009 extra cab.

Not sure on numbers, but check if the front diff has an ADD drive on it. SR5's have a disconnecting front diff, SR's don't. ABS will give it away too on a 2009. From memory in 2009 an SR had rubber floor mats and SR5 carpet plus maybe the trip computer was SR5 only.

My sr5 shows up as an sr, so don't think its right

Simplest at that age is to look at the interior.
SR5 had carpet sr to best of my knowledge doesn’t. And to change it out is a pain in the rear.
And you should find that the SR5 space cab did NOT have a SR5 sticker on the door, it was only on the tailgate. If it has one then be aware it’s aftermarket. Only the dual cab had SR5 on the door. (This doesn’t mean that the owner has not bought the sticker and put it on though as I intended to do this on mine but got lazy)
Can’t you just put the VIN in a revs check and it comes up

I don't think the VIN alone will tell you; mine comes up as a DLX when it's an SR, and the SR5s come up as SRs.

I can only speak for my model and year (2006 SR), but the SR lacked rear hand grips (above the windows) and rear speakers. However, those are easily added...

As mentioned above, vinyl on the interior is a tell-tale sign and is a pain to change out. The front diff. not having the ADD is probably the most reliable check though.

Easiest way to tell is by the body look and interior look. Most SRs have the little hooks/rubbers on the side of the tray (most SR5s will have this too so be careful). SRs have a different head unit to the SR5, SR comes with no carpet on the floor, SR doesn't have mirror adjusters (to my knowledge), SRs generally came with an aluminium tray, SR5 sits higher than the SR ground clearance wise for 4WD reasons, tailgates on the SR have handles both sides unlike the SR5 which has a single handle in the middle and most Srs I've worked on don't have flares from factory like the SR5

That's a V6, 4wd, double cab, 5 speed auto, SR5.
Can't be any clearer than that.

Mine says KUN26R-P(R)MD(Y)(Q), so 1KD-FTV 4WD Double-Cab Manual. Bit confusing that SR (S) = SR5, and DLX (D) = SR.

Most things that people have mentioned can be easily changed making them look like an sr5.
The biggest giveaway from looking at pictures is the instrument cluster and center display is different.
Note that these parts can be changed, but usually isn’t because of the cost involved.

I think in other markets the SR5 was called a DLX. I know some differences on my 08 SR5 to other SR's I've seen are: Chrome mirrors, ADD front diff solenoid, carpet floor, speakers in rear doors, factory flares, different well body, interior front map lights, dimmer switch for dash, different grille, higher suspension, alloy wheels,power heat button.

If it's a pre 2014 model, only the SR5's have VSC and the ADD unit from 2009. *Unless* it's a 2013 and got the "vsc pack" optional extra from factory. To be honest, I believe that is the only known mechanical difference between the two.
