Plastic Moulding under factory hard lid

Postby PCB on Mon, 02 Apr 2018 6:20 +0000

Hi guys, I have a 2015 Gen 7 Dual Cab SR5 with the factory hard lid. The Plastic mouldings under the hard lid means I lose in some areas significant space which causes hassles with the important BBQ and Esky for camping. I presume this plastic fancy moulding is there to provide structural support for the hard lid? Anyone removed it without a problem or come up with any great ideas about how to run with the lid partially up to create more height? I need about 5-10cm. I did see someone driving with the lid partially up once with custom canvas between the lid and the tub for their dogs but couldn’t catchup to them to find out who did it. (And yes in hindsight I should have bought a canopy but didnt have a caravan or dog when I bought the Ute new in 2015). Thanks.

I know there are people on this site that have cut the fibreglass reinforcing under the hard lid to fit in 12v fridges. I haven't done it personally, but I wouldn't cut too much out - it's got to be there for a reason.
The more fuel I use, the more fun I have!

Why not sell the hardlid and buy a used canopy if that suits you better? They aren't all that dear especially of your car is white. Plenty on Gumtree 2005-2015, some real cheapies up to mint examples.

I figured I wasnt keen on cutting the underlid plastic. I have a Charcoal grey and haven’t found recently any on Gumtree but am looking. Thanks for advice.

Bad colour for a used canopy! As I said lots of white ones, even grey and red and blue on Gumtree, not much in charcoal!

Charcoal. When I get back from holidays I’ll ask the local panel beaters cost of respraying a canopy as an idea.
