Leaking CV or diff ?

Postby Brondonnnn on Tue, 12 Sep 2017 4:31 +0000

Hi all
Was messing around under the car and found this Image

On closer inspection very little oil has dripped onto the bash plate below so seems oil is only seeping out.
Have looked at other posts where CV seal is possible cause however I don't have anywhere near the amount of oil leaking that others have experienced.

Any thoughts as to what it could be ?

Monitor it for a while, if it gets worse and starts dripping then fix it. Done mine a few times now, sometimes they seem to leak on and off, it's weird!

Thanks for the quick response. I've de-greased it and will monitor from here on in. How hard is it to change the seal if need be?

Not hard, hardest part is getting the shaft out as it can take prying and yanking.

Thought I'd post an update.
Changed my diff oils today and had a closer look at everything..virtually no oil has been seeping out which is good and seems to be sealing fine (for the time being anyway)

On another side note where the hell is the front diff breather?? Looked at workshop manual and it doesn't appear to be where it's displayed?

Mine has the same leak off and on. Seal has been replaced twice, uses hardly any oil though.

Yeah I don't worry about the weeping anymore, if it starts to drip I mite get concerned.

Just bought a hilux and this was the only thing I could find wrong with it on inspection. Cleaned it, drove it around and left it running etc with no more issues. Did a bit of reading and couldn't find anything, mechanic assured me it wasn't an issue. VERY relieved to read the more people has come across the same thing with no issues haha.

The breathers for the ADD and diff are half way up in the engine bay.
I had to replace my front diff as it got water in there and the mechanic believes it came through those leaky diff seals. Mine were pretty f$@#&% when I took them out but they were only dripping on and off as well.

Haven’t had a chance to put the breathers in yet but have since had the CV seal leaking again, like mentioned earlier it’s only seeping so I’ve given up worrying until it drips like TOYZX mentioned.

I have done A LOT of water crossings many times forced to on remote trips of varying depths and touch wood have never had any water get into the diffs despite not having any breathers (stupid I know).

City or Bush driver? The reason I ask, are you sure it's not just road grim? Earlier posts seem to indicate the quantities are not that great? The other thing about city driving is that it's really easy to pick up (splash patterns) oil from other vehicles.
Just a thought.

The diff housing seal is a known problem. It's like a $30 part but you need to remove the cv at the diff end to replace it. Easy enough if you can drop the two bolts on the lower end of the steering knuckle
I might be wrong.

Someone also mentioned in one of the earlier posts that they used degreaser to tidy things up. All I'd suggest here is to be careful using ANY chemicals on or around the rubber components, CV boots etc, as it eat them up pretty quickly.
