Clicking noise coming out of engine bay?

General discussion of basically anything Hilux related

Back on topic here - I get both the water circulating noise after I switch the engine off - and about 2 - 3 minutes later I get one loud click type noise.

It's not a series of clicks that resembles a grasshopper with an ouzi, just one loud click and it does not sound like the muffler cooling down - and it would not cool down that quick anyway i doubt.

Is that similar to what anyone else has experienced??

Rich.

Hi all

I've just uploaded a youtube clip of my woodpecker going off. Video is pretty crap as light no good in garage but it's the sound that counts.

I've been told it's the variable vane step motor looking for a step. This is with ignition at the on position.

Is that with the motor running? If anyone tells you that isn't an issue, tell them you have swine flu and sneeze all over them... Thats got issues...

The only other thing I could think of if its not the turbo would be a stick or something caught in the thermo fan near the radiator... the sound may bounce about so best to eyeball it...

Other than that... warranty claim I'd reckon...

Hi

Motor not running. Ignition at on and left there. I have been told it is the step motor for the variable vanes trying to find centre. It doesn't do it all the time.

I work next to a vehicle inspector for Fair Trading and he was out Wagga last week and checked on 2 diesel hiluxes and they did this noise. He also rang Toyota Head Office and was advised that this does happen and not a problem.

Anyway I am going to take it to local Toyota dealer and see what they say as well.

The car runs fine.

That is not the noise that mine makes. Mine is like one loud clunk, about 2 minutes after you turn it off.

Sorry to drag up an old thread guys, but I've noticed a "click" similar to the one Rich described.

Once the engine is at running temp, if I shut down, remove keys, lock up etc, and stand and wait for a minute or so, a obvious click comes the engine bay.

It does it once and then nothing for a couple of minutes, then it will do it again. It sometimes does it once only, sometimes 3 or 4 times over a few minutes.

It sounds kind of like someone is giving the block one good tap with a 20mm spanner.

I've just fitted my rebuilt motor (done a thousand odd kms now) and the engine is running sweet.

I am thinking it may just be everything settling in while it's cooling down?

What do you guys think? Rich, did you find the source of your clicking noise? I don't have dual batteries.

I have exactly the same problem you describe cairnzy. Driving me nuts trying to work out what it is. Sounds like its coming from above the rocker cover somewhere around the intercooler. Really hope someone can shed some light on this one...

Mine has a consistent tick/ tap noise.
Coming from turbo stepper motor. If u touch it (black solinoid thing on top of turbo) u can feel the tapping.
Is it bad or a sign the turbo is on its way out???

Is it a continous click from near the turbo? If so its perfectly normal and all d4ds should do it to some degree. I believe its the oil draining back into the sump from the turbo housing itself and the noise is the from the small electric pump thats doing the work...

Is it a whine which is followed by a slightly louder single clunk? This one i believe comes from near the injector driver unit - the silver looking finned block on the firewall passenger side. Not sure if its a common thing but my 2010 model has done it since new and only after driving it then stopping and taking the key from off to on. At which point the other continous clicks and draining noise above will continue until the key is taken to the acc position...
