Hey Craig. I had a similar issue with mine. I changed the fuel filter and when I removed it I blew from the clean side back and found out it was full of crap. Like black slimy diesel death crap. Changed the filter and it helped but wasn't the saving grace. I checked my fuel trims and found that they were defaulting to 0% instead of the normal graph. Long story short, my fuel pump wasn't keeping up. Changed it and I haven't had a drama since.
If you're going to go down that road though. Go to Toyota, get a price (should be about $999 excluding labour or $660 if you ask for trade discount), tell them to eat a fat one, go to super cheap auto and get a price (should be about $380 for a genuine denso pump. I paid $120 because I knew someone who worked for the super cheap group) and then decided if you really want to replace it as it is a massive pain in the ass and I mean monumental. That's coming from a mechanic with almost a decades experience.
The other issue you may be having is the ACIS? AICS? I forget which it is but it's the acoustic induction control system. It uses long runners for low rpm to increase torque and opens a valve to shorten the runners to increase power. This happens just after 2000 rpm and that increase in air calls for more fuel which maxed out the pump on mine.
You may be having issues with yours sticking which could cause a similar issue. I coul talk forever about this so let me know if you need more info or send me pm and I'll give you a call.

Nope, I definitely own a v6 and I'm feeling it at the moment. $1.31 per litre for petrol hurts haha

Suburban driving my 08 with 63000kms it averages high 14l/100km, that's driving it very conservatively, carrying no load at all. On the highway with a tray full of camping gear it can get down to the high 11l/100km sitting on 100km/h using cruise control.
Would be nice to get better economy but everytime I drive a late model diesel dualcab at work, I love getting back in my smooth, quiet and powerful 1GRFE. Great motor!!! The Hilux is so much more comfortable than most the others too!!

Currently averaging 10.8 per 100 in my 07 2wd xtra cab around town using e10.
That is babying it to the max. Never goes over 2000rpm.
Pretty disappointing.

Should be happy with that millsi, sure to improve on a long trip. Have you tried premium fuel? Apparently the V6 loves it. E10 has ethanol which is known to reduce economy. Also E10 is not always E10... some are 91 octane and others are 95, check at the bowser.... oils ain't oils Sol ;) Use the 95 if you can get it... BP and Caltex E10 are 95octane as far as I know.

megs, I have a 2GRfe aurion and it is a great mill also, I think it is a short stroke 1grfe? Dual vvti Smooth as silk and economical at 8l/100k and goes like a cut snake! Unlike the 1grfe it revs easily to 6500 and cruises at 1400rpm @ 100kph probably because of the shortened stroke?

Yes, 83mm stroke for the 2GR 3.5L versus 95mm for the 1GR 4.0L. The 2GR are a dual VVTi engine too which makes them rev harder and go well, but not as torquey as the VVTi 1GR. They are normally 200-220kW at over 6000rpm. The best ones to get peak power out of are the dual VVTi 1GR as in FJ Cruisers, these go like stink with a belt driven style supercharger, I've heard of over 270kW at the back wheels.

So I guess my next project is a dual vvti 1grfe hilux or Prado with a blower added! Don't really like the cruisers but the others 2nd hand make a great base for a project hot 4x4. The later model Prado and lux have the dual vvti as far as I know.

Haven't tried premium yet. Car is also lpg so will be gauging it's use when the fuel light cones on. Will all depend on the price difference bewteen petrol and lpg as to what fuel I use

I don't think the Hilux does, only the FJ Cruiser, 150 Series (Prado) and Lexus here. Overseas the Landcruisers, Tundra and 4runner as well.

It depends on what you want it for, the 1GR VVTi with an Eaton blower (aka TRD) will give the largest torque output, mine has 600nM at the tyres. With a Raptor blower on one of these you'll get 250rwkW but only 500-550nM. If you want one to really impress locally the FJ cruiser or 150 Series with a Raptor or Rotrex or similar belt driven turbine is the go. With the 2016-17 Hilux you are restricted to a turbine type, whereas you can put a traditional screw type blower on up to 2015. Same with the Prado although I think the VVTi finished in 2011-ish.

With any of these you'll have all the power and torque you'll ever need.

11.9L per 100km of gas (highway). That's $7.85 per 100km.
Pretty good! Over $2 Saved per 100km over my old d4d. Around town it's closer being just over $1 Saved compared with the d4d.

Feeling as if I should put in my 2 cents as ive meticulously monitered almost every tank of fuel ive used over the last 18 months.
HEAVILY LOADED with camping gear, if not camping gear its loaded with tools for the daily.
2009 v6 Hilux auto dual cab
32's, 2'' lift, rooftop tent, winch, 2nd battery, underbody protection, rear drawers, fridge etc. SHES LOADED UP! on the big trips the car weighs in at just under 3t.

Fully loaded for touring trips the absolute best economy ive gotten was 14L/100ks and thats sitting on 100kmh @ roughly 1800rpm but usually my highway speed varies between 100-110 and I tend to get 14.5-16L/100. Around town (Sydney) I average between 16-18L/100ks.

At times Ive thought about cutting my losses, buying a diesel and starting over again but that would be at big financial loss. Then I remember how much fun I have flogging it in the sand dunes (with the auto feels like im driving a race car at times) and on the beach and think "hell no" especially when i see diesel hilux's struggling to get up the sand dunes at Blacksmiths beach, I cant help but chuckle to myself a little.

In my opinion the v6 in smoother, more powerful and a bloody nice car to drive. If your worried about an extra 20-30-40 $$$ per tank of fuel in comparison to the diesel hilux just think about the economy that v8 70 series drivers get and its not that much different to the petrol hilux. My mates 76 cruiser gets 15L/100ks constant and when he tows the trailer on big trips its 20+. 4wding isnt a poor mans game! Dont get me wrong I wish the economy was on par with modern day diesels but it never will be and ive come to to except the v6 for what it is, nice car to drive but shes a drinker!
