Recycle air switch on the dash

Postby WillsLux on Thu, 03 Dec 2015 11:01 +0000

Hi everyone,

This is my first ever post, even though i have been looking through the site for more than 18 months now! I have just finished building up my 2011 dual cab d4d and have returned from a trip away to the west of SA. In my travels I think the corrugations have shaken something loose in the dash. I can now no longer select between outside or recycle air. The slide switch is almost jammed on outside air and wont slide across to the recycled air.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is it an easy fix or a toyota dealer job?

I thought about removing the radio to have a look but thought i would post here first.

Also, thanks to everyone that posts on here, the information on this site is invaluable!!!

Regards, Will

just approach the job with logic, it is a simple mechanical system with a control on the dash which attaches to a cable that pushes and pulls, pop the control panel out by pulling the knobs off and finding the screws.
Follow the offending cable back to the box and work out how it is supposed to work, then figure out why it doesn't work, release the cable and see which bit doesn't move, only 3 parts, the slide, the cable and the door in the box.

Thanks mate, sounds like a safe and calculated way to attempt it. Will give it a crack this weekend. Cheers Will

Yep - as Marty says its simple. This one is also common.
1. Open up the glove box and remove it.
2. Look up to the top of the firewall (you may crick ya neck doing this)
3. Wiggle the mechanism gently (dont bust the mechanism) to identify the obstruction
4. There will be a flap of firewall insulation that will have fallen down into the air vent diversion mechanism.
5. Either remove the offending material or glue it back so it wont fall down again.

If you need a step by step for accessing it, there is a thread on here somewhere for changing the colour of your dash lights, if you search for that, it shows how to remove the HVAC controls you're dealing with.

I have this problem also on my recent hi lux purchase, only mine is stuck to the left on recycle air worst luck!, i stripped the knobs panel the same time while i was working on my stereo wiring and there was nothing at the slider hampering it like discussed above, the cable was just very tight to the left the way it shoots off over the glove box, i took that out as described and followed it to where i could then it seems to disappear through the firewall, and then i could see nothing under the bonnet on the other side, is there any access to the other end of the cable to investigate further?

Thanks.
