Drowned hilux cranks but won't turn over

Postby Tumblr on Wed, 22 Apr 2015 9:01 +0000

So recently on a hunting trip my hilux got stuck in a river crossing for a few hours waiting for another truck to pull me out. Water up past the centre console truck was on an angle passenger side front corner into the water. I've got the truck back home and having issues diagnosing why it won't start... Things I've done:

Let it dry out with plugs disconnected (it's dry as and 30 deg constant in the NT)
Checked all the fuses
Changed the fuel filter
Drained the fuel tank
Put in new fuel
Charged both my batteries
Checked oil, no milk
Truck showed water in fuel light, hence the drained tank

I can turn the key and it cranks hard but won't turn over.
Put some fuel on the air filter and got it to run but only for 20 or so seconds before it stalls out. When I have done this I get no throttle response when I use the gas pedal.

When it was coming out of the water I could hear a relay going flat out under the bonnet, glow plug relay?
Any help, thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

Definitely sounds like it's starving for fuel. Air lock in the pump perhaps? Model? Year?

Try pulling the plug apart in the foot well on the accelerator pedal and clean it with crc, contact cleaner or something, I think a few people have experienced that. Its worth a try.

See if a scantool or techstream can connect to the ecu. Could be it's stuffed - at the least you might find an error code

2006 sr5 dual cab D4D auto.

Connected to OBD port got no fault codes.
Wouldn't be an airlock in the pump if I can get fuel to the fuel filter canister with the prime button? Can pump it up till it gets rock solid. Then goes soft again after cranking.

Will try contact cleaner I the pedal box connections and tps etc. I've checked the tps plug with a multimeter and key turned to on, got zero, zero and 6 volts from the plug. But no change when the gas pedal was applied.

Take the outlet hose of the fuel filter and prime see if fuel pumps through. Maybe you have done this already

Replaced ecu, each, turbo control (some of the insides were fried from the waterl... Every box behind the glove box... Security light goes out so immobiliser is disarmed? Car doesn't crank now (stopped before I changed ECU), have checked starter motor has constant 12v and earths have no corrosion. When key turned to on no crank, but the radio and clock lights turn out, dash lights etc stay on. When key comes to accessories from on position can here loud click from starter motor (relay?).

Have ordered a new starter motor... Anyone got any other ideas?

Call your insurance company
I love hybrid cars - means more fuel for me

Id be making it the insurance company's problem. It could be any number of things, some sort of scan tool would be a good start.

And your starter probably just needs taking off and cleaning rather than a new one.

good luck with it mate

Got more info on what you have done to date to try and get it started?
I might be wrong.

Removed/drained intake, removed glow plugs and wound over by hand then by the starter. Drained the milky oil, filled with fresh stuff. Cranks over allgood but no power to glow rail or injectors, have tried a 2nd hand ecu& injector driver still no luck

If you (somehow) got water into the injector pump then you'll need to bleed the whole system, maybe even pull the injector pump apart. Snorkel? How high is your air intake? Is your intake system COMPLETELY air tight? Could even end up with a complete intake rebuild?
Please keep us informed how you go with it all.

I’d be unplugging every electrical connector I could find and cleaning and spraying with CRC 2-26. This sounds electrical if there’s no power to glow plugs or injectors.

In stead of just guessing try doing a couple of checks.
Find sensors like the crank angle and cam angle sensors which the injectors rely on to operate, test that they have a supply voltage that they need to operate, most sensors will be supplied by the same circuit from the ecm and a plug full of silt or a faulty sensor can drag this voltage down to near zero.A good schematic would be very handy ad would a scan tool.
In this weather I wouldnt be too concerned about having no glow power, most likley not used unless it os really cold.

Also id recomend not to use 2-26.
Clean the connectors with contact cleaner then apply a little dielectric grease.
2-26 can make the neoprene seals swell and become useless.

How are you testing for an injector signal?
They can be very brief and hard to detect with conventional equipment?
Is there a check engine light on?

I’ve never heard of 2-26 reacting with neoprene or rubber nor have I seen it react. If it’s good enough for Boeing 737’s and Airbus aircraft sealed connectors I’ll put money on it that it’s fine for auto applications as well. I’ve been using it for decades on all sorts of electrical components and especially connectors and never had a issue. Displacing moisture, cleaning and protecting against corrosion on connectors is what it does best.

I can’t see any warnings on the tech data sheet either.

2-26 turns some seals and o rings to jelly.
You wont see warnings on NF contact cleaner about plastics either but try spraying an anderson type connector with it.
