rear pinion bearing.

Hey all.

Has anyone had their rear diff pinion replaced? Mine has a little noise nothing major as yet. Really want to know what sort of prices people paid for parts and labour, and or, if they did it themselves. Any help would be appreciated cheers

im getting my diffs re geared at the moment and they told me rear would cost about$400 to $500 to disassemble and rebuild with new bearings and seals. that price was with me supplying new bearings and seals and also me pulling diff out and just dropping the center off to them.

they charge $100/per hour

How do you know it is the pinion bearing?

The wheel bearing was that worn in the rear that the noise was travelling to both wheels and up the drive train.

Sorry to dig up an old thread Andy - I think I may be in the same predicament as what you went through.

No diff whine as such - but definite play that seems to be slightly louder on one side/wheel compared to the other side/wheel, whilst still making slight noise in the diff.

Down the highway it sounds like loud road-noise - but more cyclical, like a WHIR-WHIR-WHIR that increases in pace as the speed increases.

Just wondering how you diagnosed this problem, as I too do not believe it to be the diff at this point.

Does the noise change under load - on throttle/off throttle? That might help you identify if its a diff problem.

But in my experience, unless you can hear it on a hoist, you can only be certain by pulling the suspect parts out. I'll post next week about my own personal driveline noise adventures.

The noise is like a WHIR noise - almost like a bad spot on the tyre, that increases/decreases beat with the speed of the car.

When I hoist the vehicle on car-stands, spin the wheel and listen; I hear noise on both rear wheels AND none in the diff BUT a slight movement when spinning the wheels forward/reverse... like a little play.

Not entriely convinced I have narrowed this problem down - looking for suggestions before investing in the more expensive problems.

Quick update - I believe I have discovered the problem.

A had a buggered wheel bearing that was SOOO bad, it was transferring a WHIR noise up through the diff. I find it hard to believe it got this bad so quickly - I got plenty of km's out of the bearing, but instead of the noise slowly developing it showed itself instantly THEN got worse over the course of 30km.

Just goes to show - when some of these issues present themselves it is best to stop the car and get it on the hoist for an inspection IMMEDIATELY. Thankfully - I did just that

I had my pinion bearing done on my SR5 just before Christmas, cost me $1200.

BUT, I had the following done all at the same time:

Front diff oil
Transfer case oil
Gearbox oil
Rear diff pinion bearing and oil
LHF seal

I just did mine - cost me about $300 in genuine parts, a solid spacer etc etc. Its definitely an involved job and requires a lot of patience.
