Here's the data I collected up until the new fuel tank went in..



The white columns contain the information taken from the vehicle, and the grey columns are all calculated using that data, so they should be pretty accurate.
From memory, when I compared these average numbers with those provided by the trip computer, there were errors ranging from around 10% above, to 10% below the real world figures. I'd supply the trip computer numbers for you all to see, but I deleted them when I worked out how far removed they were from reality.


Only factor I thought might have made the errors would depend on how the computer calculates its averages.
Does it keep calculating over the whole period after you reset the figures, or does it only worry about a certain number of kilometres prior to what it is currently showing.
Eg. If you drive hard for half a tank using 14L/100km, but then cruise along flat straight roads using 8L/1000km for the 200km after. Is the average displayed at the end of this trip going to be an average of both portions of the journey, or just the last 100km say?

Does anyone know for certain how it does it?

I tend to reset the counter at everty refill and I also noted a 10% miscalculation except for the last thank (my driving was almost all under the same speeds, same conditions and the 10.4 matched the real figures.

Yeah, I used to reset and record all figures at every fill.
Everything else would match up with what my trusty spreadsheet calculated, just not the km/L or L/100.
It's currently reading 9.0L/100, but I doubt that to be the case.

Just to follow up.
The average displayed on the dash remained between 8.8-9.1/100 for the rest of the tank, but when I refuelled and did the math, it was really 9.9L/100.

SR5 2012 manual - still factory default no mods or add ons

city = 9.41L/100
combined = 8.21L/100 or 13km/L

last week did country run and the last 120km completed in city runs (alot of starts and stops) got 790km from 65L tank

i use an android app called FuelGauge to record all my top ups and calculates the average mileage from the top ups

Hold down the RESET button till it resets. Same for elapsed time and average speed.

I have been tracking mine for the last 12 months

My stats are (L/100km)

Average 12.69
City 11.71
Towing (1.7 t trailer) 14.85
Combined City/ Country (no towing) 10.74

My Lux has ,bullbar, driving lights, hard lid, and 31.5 inch tires on standard diff ratios

Been monitoring this lately as to monitor any signs of injector wear ('Lux just ticked over 120,000km travelled).

2006 dual cab D4D, 265/75R16 (32") tyres, 2" lift, steel bullbar, fibreglass canopy, rear unloaded, Denso snorkel, manual transmission; averaging about 10.5L/100km. That's running BP Ultimate Diesel from the same two service stations religiously as well.

Those numbers come from my daily commute to and from work which is 50% suburbia and 50% highway driving (average speed of 120km/h). If I slowed down on the highway, I might be able to get this lower? If I ran a higher pressure in my tyres I'd probably also gain a little (tyres are at 34PSI front and 32PSI rear as per recommendation from Cooper Tyres). I drive pretty calmly during the suburbia section but a bit quick on the highway.

I've been pretty paranoid with the vehicle as of late (for no particular reason as well) so this is a good result for me.

Driving an SR so this is manually calculated. Also using Marks 4WD Speedo Corrector so the numbers are off a little I assume? Last odometer check area said that I travelled 4.9km at the 5km checkpoint.

yes that's what i see on my manual 2.5 as well. now driving 110 @clock == 100 Kph at cruisecontrol / GPS. seems to get close to 1:11,5 on long drives.

I drive with an egg under the throttle (very carefully) and often get sub 7/100kl so it is possible to get extremely good consumption at highway/urban mix of driving... just keep it under 100kph unless you are in a hurry

very impressive figures mine was good when stock maybe 750km to 780km to a tank then all the mods came now only getting 600km to 640km a tank

yes I do get sub 7 regularly and tried reset with each fuel fillup and repeated since the car was new... now at 35k's and with or without reset the calculations at the pump confirm it. I do have a 3" turbo-back exhaust and that did improve the consumption slightly but yes I tell no lies Oh and yes I have the 7mm blanking plate so that helps.

Gipsy what speeds do you drive then? 90 k/ph only downhill?

My stock 2.5 manual won't get better than  8.3/100 when cruising 110 K/ph on the flat good tarmac roads in europe.

and so far I've never made that figure on a full tank... only on the computer I usually end up between 9 & 10 /100

07 4.o Auto 2WD : 1st test mostly urban, with a short country trip. 13.4l/100k

But will be doing a full service and tune next week, and then I'll hopefully see an improvement.

Just did the Madigan Line & the QAA , Kulgra to Birdsville distance 936 k, average was 15.8 L/100 (auto D4D, at 3.2 tonne)
V8 200 series 25 L/100 & 4.2 Patrol 22L/100 for same trip

Got back from our honeymoon trip through the outback a fortnight ago.
14466km, and averaged 12.7L/100km.

Highest numbers were in the deserts.
14.6L/100 - CSR, Wiluna to Kunawarritji
14.9L/100 - CSR, Kunawarritji to Halls Creek
14.7L/100 - Simpson Desert, Mount Dare to Birdsville via French Line

Average fuel price was $1.486/L
Cheapest was $1.099/L - Dubbo
Most expensive was $3.400/L - Kunawarritji
Followed by $2.000/L - Mount Dare
